Hollis Montessori Ratings & Reviews
Hollis Montessori provided a great education for our daughters. They were very well prepared for the rigors of high school and college. Even more than that, they are well-spoken, engaged and curious people who want to contribute to the world.
Our child has attended Hollis Montessori School for four years. We are extremely happy with the quality of education, both academic, as well as, his social and emotional development. The strong focus on independence and caring for the classroom environment are valuable life skills at every age. The multi-age classroom has helped our son thrive at school. He has grown from a child who was mentored by his older classmates to a child who now mentors his younger classmates. As the Latin proverb says, Docendo discimus, “by teaching, we learn." The staff of Hollis Montessori has done a wonderful job in balancing our son’s precocious thirst for knowledge while ensuring he has a strong fundamental base in math and language during his kindergarten year. The work a child does in a Montessori classroom is purposeful and it builds throughout their education. Tools our son began using during his early years in Children’s House are now used to teach him multiplication and division. Something we have heard often from the staff is that process is more important than the product. We completely agree! This isn’t a teach to test environment. It’s an environment where the process of learning is valued and taught in every grade. Part of the process is encouraging and fostering a child’s innate desire to learn, so they will become lifetime learners. We have found the staff to be caring, dedicated, and truly invested in the happiness and success of each child. Hollis Montessori School is more than a school; it’s a community of children, guides, staff, and parents. The Head of School and Classroom Guides host numerous educational events for parents each year that explain the Montessori approach. They are always responsive to parent’s questions and concerns. We look forward to continuing our son’s education at Hollis Montessori School for many years to come. On a side-note, I am extremely envious of the Adolescent Program for 7th through 9th grades in comparison to my own public school learning. It truly makes me want to attend middle school again, words I never thought I would say.
We know a few families who left Hollis Montessori School (HMS) because they were not satisfied with the education they received. We’re one of those parents. If you look for strong academic, we don’t recommend this school based on our experience. We believe that our child couldn't reach his potential when he was at HMS for three years. Our son struggled (boredom in class) during the Children House years and in Lower Elementary first year. We had him tested by a private psychologist, and he was identified gifted. Before he was identified, we visited the teachers many times and asked more and challenging works for our son. Unfortunately, HMS couldn’t meet our child’s academic needs. Our son came to the point that he hated going to school, so we pulled him out of HMS as of March 2017 and started him to another Montessori school. Our bright son was held back for years at HMS, but he flourished at this new school right away, because he gets challenged here academically. When we observed the classroom, we saw this chaotic environment (30+ kids in the same class). Kids were hanging around, getting outside of the class. We were also thinking how children can learn in a noisy classroom, and how they can focus. They hired a new LE teacher who just got out of the college, who had no experience in teaching. She became a lead teacher. The Lower El assistant teacher left last year, so they hired a parent who had no experience and degree in teaching. I know it is easy to get impressed by the beautiful school building, but a beautiful building won’t give your child the education he/she needs. If you’re planning to send your child to HMS please take our advice; Always ask about your child’s academic progress, ask about what your child is learning and what he’ll learn. Ask about the academic plan & goals for your child for that year. Make them send you reports (if not weekly, ask bi-weekly- it is more work for them, but your child’s education is important). Observe the classroom more often. Listen to your child, and never underestimate your child’s complaints. Do listen to your child, as Maria Montessori said, “follow the child”, and listen to your parenting instincts. No one knows your child better than you.Cons: Weak academic Pros: Good social/life skills and wonderful parents
This is the best Montessori school in the area. My son is a student in the Children's House and loves going to school. The teachers are warm, caring, and very attentive to each child's needs, strengths, and areas where they need to grow with time and guidance. My son often tells us how much he loves his teachers, and is excited to go to school each morning. His clear understanding of math concepts learned in just a few months amazes me - I often notice he has gained a strong foundation of the abstract math concepts - but they seem concrete to him. I am convinced that learning the beginning math concepts with beads has made his primary math foundation strong, clear, and fun to learn. The Head of School and Assistant Head of School could not be any better: they communicate well and often, and respond to parent questions or concerns quickly and thoughtfully. All the teachers I have worked with are very accessible and welcome parent communication and feedback. The teachers at this school are thoughtfully selected and very talented at what they do! The school highly encourages parent involvement, and the families respond. This school has a great community of families!
