Bernice A. Ray School Ratings & Reviews

Our child's education at the Ray school proves disappointingly mediocre for a high-tax payer area. Some kids and parents thrive on the quantifiable testing culture of the school, but if your kid wants to learn about a subject more deeply, then he/she will be unable to do so here. The teachers could be more progressive in their discipline bias towards boys, especially. Arithmetic skills should be taught with equal attention as literacy. Although the school is respectful of other cultures, the community is not socioeconomically diverse, unhealthily competitive, and very sports-driven. The community does not take kindly to dual-income (not to be confused with dual-career) families or who may not always have funds to pay for extra tutoring or for purchasing organic groceries all the time. If you do not work for the college or DHMC, you're better off living in a cheaper town with independent schools or school choice in general.

We have two children in the Ray school and couldn't be happier. The educational experience is far beyond what they received in our previous school district. The teachers are genuinely interested and go the extra mile. The high scores reflected on standardized testing speaks for itself - but just the environment there: the other children, caring teachers, involved parents, all makes this a wonderful experience and culture.

In reading the last comment, I find it interesting that for a well-educated community, the notion that NECAP results are a valuable indicator of a successful school is limiting at best. In review of norm referenced data for this school, they have very impressive results. Considering the school's national recognition with a 10-year performance report, it seems the last parent comment was sour grapes.

The last 2 comments illustrate nicely the issues with the school. One comment points out, using data, at least one measurable area in which the school is not all that it could be. The other "scoffs at the idea" that the school is anything "less than exceptional." Sadly, most of the community seems OK with getting slightly better than average outcomes from much better than average raw material, as typified by the second comment.

My daughters love their school. The programs are excellent, my daughters have learnt so many interesting facts this year. My first grader knows how to conduct a basic research with references! She even had a presentation about the work she did. YES she is only six years old but she and her entire class did an amazing job on animal research. I learnt interesting animal facts from those fisrt graders.
