The Expedition School Ratings & Reviews

Our child just finished his first year here & we love it. Small class sizes, beautiful classrooms, incredible teachers & assistants, & great admins. There is a true mission of educating the whole child through project based learning here, & I love the inclusive nature of the classrooms. There may be a lot of debate surrounding charter schools in NC, but this school is high quality & we are so happy to be part of this community!

TES is everything you could hope for in a school. Talented, caring & engaged teachers and an administration that respects teachers, parents and students. Top notch leadership & vision. High academic standards & achievement. And the school culture is incredible (the entire school implements Responsive Classrooms strategies.) Children are so incredibly kind to each other, I've never seen any kind of bullying, and you can tell kids are actually engaged & happy to be there. It's a wonderful community. But rather than read these reviews, go tour and see for yourself. You will most certainly fall in love!

"This is our fourth year at The Expedition School; we enrolled the first year the school opened its doors. Our children (now in 5th and 8th grades) have had a great experience there. The first year was a little bumpy as the school was set up, programs established, and teachers learned to embrace project-based learning - but this is to be expected in any new school. Administrators, teachers, and staff members have consistently supported our children in their academic and social development. Both of our kids have been challenged academically, with administration creating academic opportunities for advanced learners. Class size is limited to 44 per grade. Teachers team-teach in the upper school (grades 5 - 8). Grades are combined in the elementary school (grades 1 and 2 together & grades 3 and 4 together). These arrangements provide students with the chance to experience more than one teacher each year and to enhance their learning by allowing them working up or down the grade spectrum as needed. The school counselor is very supportive and trusted by the students; they feel comfortable bringing concerns to her attention. The administrators are responsive to feedback and questions. End of grade testing is required, but the school does not ""teach to the test"" and the staff does not focus on the importance of test scores - there are no ""you can do it"" pep rallies or stern admonitions here, unlike our last school. All in all, we're very happy to be part of The Expedition School community."

My child has has a great experience at Expedition. I read the two star comment from 2015 and can’t identify with any of it. The homework amount is perfect, students are kind, test scores are strong... I don’t see how she had such an issue. However, make sure you’re informed about how Great Schools rates schools. They base their ratings on standardized test scores and their metrics are flawed. For example, Expedition, a high performing school that maintains high test scores year to year will show a low rating for “student progress” because they maintain high scores. This will bring the overall average down.
