"Guilford Country is blessed with excellent school choices where students can encounter challenging work. Among these, ECG is perhaps suited to those kids who are coming out of 8th grade capable of college level work (as many smart kids are), but also capable of a prodigious velocity/volume of work without burning out or becoming unhappy. Some kids capable of understanding the advanced (for age) material would nevertheless find themselves unhappy at ECG simply because of the bandwidth required for multiple simultaneous accelerated classes, and parents considering ECG should take this into consideration. In the first two years, typical AP classes are semester-long, not full year-long, meaning that the pace is as fast as it will be at a university. Similarly, the high school classes (typically honors level when not AP) are traditional year-long classes taught at high pace in order to fit into single semesters. The result is to squeeze four years of work into two years. For example, in mathematics a student might take pre-calculus honors as a first semester freshman; AP statistics second semester that year; calculus AB as a first semester sophomore; and calculus BC as a second semester sophomore. No corners are cut, the material is just taught at a very fast pace - in every class. The final two years, the students are full time enrolled students at Guilford College, study under the professors of Guilford College, and have a wide range of courses of study available to choose from without the constraints of having to fulfill requirements a major. The rigorous course-load and small size of the school make for a close-knit academic community. The teachers are experienced in gifted education and know how to motivate and inspire the students. For the right child - one who is organized, self-sufficient, and most importantly likes to drink knowledge from a firehose and ask for more - ECG is a wonderful home for the high school years where they will find like-minded students and a curriculum they will love.N.B. - One of the areas ECG gets dinged in state and county assessments is in the category of ""progress,"" or how much better the kids score this year compared to last year. However, it is something of a meaningless statistic at ECG because at the 99th percentile there is nowhere to improve to, as one cannot score into a higher percentile."

My daughter presently attends this wonderful school. There is not enough praise for how the staff and teachers have encouraged her to work hard in both her academic classes and in her extra-curricular activities. The students work well together and there is a lot of class spirit. They have a lot of the typical high school activities like homecoming, prom, NHS, and a ton of clubs. Juniors and seniors are encouraged to work with the Freshmen and Sophomores as TA's. Yes, there is way more homework than a typical high school, but my daughter is completely prepared for college.

This school hands down has the most knowledgeable and motivated students and teachers in the county. No debate. But I can't give this school a good review when they fail to help underclassmen have a balanced life and waste time being sticklers about rules they don't respect themselves (tardiness, language, late work, list goes on). They recognize that they are busy and make mistakes, but expect us to be perfect in the name of rigor. Why, then, do juniors tell us that they don't get 4 hours of sleep in college? Sophomore year isn't to prepare you for college, it's a dream world where teachers pretend that there aren't classes besides their own for students to contend with.

Excellent school. The new principal and the entire team are making great efforts to innovate.

This school seems to be evolving from an Early College program that accepted only the most academically elite students in the Guilford County School system to one that is placing more priority on diversity. This means that some of the top students in the county will be rejected due to their race and gender despite having higher grades and academic capabilities. It is not clear whether Guilford College has imposed this new priority through their official plans or if Guilford County Schools made this decision. Right now, the school is still ranked highly based on reputation. For the right students, this program is a great opportunity, but if you have a student who doesn't manage his/her time well or doesn't have the fortitude to spend most of his/her waking hours writing and studying, do not consider skipping over this school a loss. There are other great high schools in Guilford County. No need for a student to demoralize him- or herself to get a solid college prep high school education. AP, IB courses and programming in the 'regular' and magnet high schools here are excellent too.
