One day, while driving home from work, I came across a sign for a private school recently opened in the area. I met both Tammys and liked all I heard about this school - the owners even had sons the same age as my sonΓÇÖs.(This was before Berkley :-) I remember like it was yesterday... Tammy C. took my son to the library at the previous location for testing. My heart pounded for those minutes while he got tested, cause at that point, I was sure MID was the right place for him. You canΓÇÖt imagine the joy I felt when she emerged with my Baby and exclaimed "Oh yes, he's ready"! My son was admitted back in 2009 and as the years progressed, a lot changed with our family, but MID was the one constant we had in our lives, always providing support. In 2011, while separated from my sonΓÇÖs father, things were really tough - so tough that I couldnΓÇÖt even afford to buy Christmas gifts for my sons. Tammy W. had asked how things were going, to which I responded "alright". Appears she wasn't convinced, as she followed up with " Are you guys ready for Christmas"? A couple of days later, I received a call from Tammy C asking me to see her that evening. That evening Tammy C led me to Rev. Winstead's office and in there, she showed me gifts of all sizes - for my boys! My heart leapt out of my chest! That was the most gifts and best Christmas my sonΓÇÖs ever had - all because of MIDΓÇÖs kindness! In 2013, when my ailing Dad came to live with us, I had incurred a ton of medical bills with more on the way and decided to send my son to a public school. I informed MID of my decision and MID decided to ease my financial burden and extended my son a 50% scholarship. In 2015, when my son was informed of the impending divorce, his one wish was that he remained enrolled at MID. MID continued to graciously extend the 50% scholarship and work with me regarding transportation and after school care. I could go on and mention so many other instances, as there are many. You've eased the transition to our new life in so many ways, words are inadequate to express our gratitude. My son is fortunate enough to get to continue his education at the only school heΓÇÖs ever attended, with the only school family heΓÇÖs known. You are Angels in our midst and we are eternally grateful. May God bless our new school, Mountain Island Day Community Charter School - from the depths of our hearts, THANK YOU!!!

IΓÇÖve waited 3 months before I decided to post anything regarding this school because I didnΓÇÖt want to be posting anything that wasnΓÇÖt fair or bias and also I needed to process everything as to what happen and why my rating is so low....needless to say, we moved on and thank God we did because IΓÇÖve witness a gain academically, responsibly, and 9yr old maturity in 4 weeks at our new school in comparison to this one. All I can say is, everything happens for a reason. Now I can go all into the story as to what happen but ItΓÇÖs a long long story that requires more conversation than text but all I can say is how do a student receive two ΓÇ£AΓÇÖsΓÇ¥...3 ΓÇ£BΓÇÖsΓÇ¥ and 1 C ....and receive all BΓÇÖs in Christian concepts and work habits on his report card on 10/31....but receive a phone a call that heΓÇÖll be expelled 2 days later for verbal bullying but yet has not ( no suspension, no parental contact prior about any incidents or fair warning about anything that might not be proper behavior in or out of school....After the phone call for the expulsion ( from the acting principle) I ask for a meeting the next day (11/2) but could not get a meeting until (11/7).....hmmmmmmNow during the meeting we ask for proper documentation such as parental contact for any prior incidents that was ΓÇ£ supposly written upΓÇ¥...did we get them....NOWe also asked about how can his grades reflect the decision to come to expulsion so quickly and all we received was a blank stare....we also asked the teacher directly with the administration ΓÇ£ from your experience ΓÇ£ do you think this situation deserve an abruptly expulsion...all we got was crickets.....what was told to us during the 3 business day delay meeting was that they did receive an email from another parent that her daughter was home crying one day because he friend ( another boy) was being bullied by my kid and she couldnΓÇÖt take it anymore....thatΓÇÖs right!!! An email from another parent....not the kid parents who was supposedly being bullied....but on a separate occasion him and his mother did come to the school and reported bullying and the asked him when did it happen and his response was ΓÇ£ a couple of weeks agoΓÇ¥ so an infraction form was written up in November and out of the blue dated ΓÇ£ Oct 12ΓÇ¥ and which we didnΓÇÖt know about until November....right at the expulsion..... canΓÇÖt make any of this up...good luck and thank God it happened!!

An update to my glowing 2013 review. Unfortunately things progressively went downhill starting in 1st grade and we eventually pulled our child out after a few years. The teacher turn over rate was high, with the good ones exiting first. Mrs. Keener was a gem, and also the exception. Many of the teachers had good intentions but lacked refined interactive skills and struggled with navigating the different personalities of each child. The communications I received from staff and teachers were usually full of typos and grammatical errors. The school either does not have the capacity to support advanced children, or only offers it to children that fit a certain mold. Our child was frequently bored with the curriculum and would talk, fidget, and doodle after finishing the work, which often landed our child in trouble. Our child was performing above grade level and all they would do is give our child more work. Not challenging work, just more work. Mrs. Keane, the principal, was the downward turning point to the school, as her poor leadership and negative disposition seeped into the culture of the teachers. She has the attitude that decades of "experience" supersedes what a parent knows is best for their own child. If a parent challenges her, she gets flustered and defensive. Instead of being an advocate for the children, and saying the school is failing the child, her mindset is it's the child that is failing the school. When I told her and her staff nothing would be accomplished until they stopped treating a boredom issue as a behavioral issue, Mrs. Keane told us "You don't know how many times I get a parent in my room telling me their child is misbehaving because they are bored." She completely ignored the fact that our child was a repeat A/B honor roll student year after year. That was the moment I knew it was time for us to leave MID. After being MID "family" for several years, no one cared to ask why we were leaving. So, consider this the exit survey we never received.

Mountain Island Day school is a wonderful school. My child has attended the school for five years now. We are truly blessed to have found this school. I am somewhat a worry wart mom, but here, I can drop my child at school with absolutely no worries which makes my day a lot less stressful. The owners are really great.I really enjoy the rise n shine breakfast they do to interact with parents. My child is doing so well at this school they truly make sure each individual child needs are met.

My children have been at Mountain Island Day since they opened and we have had a great experience. I understand that different families at the same school could have very different experiences so I wanted to share mine. I have two children in different grade levels my 4th grader reads on an 8th grade level and my 7th grader reads on a 11th grade level. Their math scores are just as high. When I speak to their peer's families they are equally as pleased with their children academics. My children are in classes that are a true indication of what Mountain Island Day is producing. My 7th grader is part of the first Kindergarten class. It is fair to say there has been some turn over but it really has not effected my family or my children. I believe people mistake adding staff from year to year based on growth with turn over because they see a new face. I have seen years where the school has added as many as 4 new staff due to growth and if they had a teacher not return it would add to the number of new faces. I have observed less and less turn over as the years have progressed and as programs estabilished. Any staff turnover I have witnessed would typically involve a staff that I was questioning. We have personally had a great experience. I see Tom and Tammy as very responsive to their staff needs and have spent time away from school with them and their staff. They appear to have a good relationship with them. I have served on the PTO, I volunteer, and I take time to get to know the people who are caring for my children. In my experience Tom and Tammy, who are board members, have expectations for the staff, students, and families of MID. They are very busy and more so as the school has grown. I have always seen them drop everything to handle a students need or to meet with a parent that had an urgent need. I want expectations for my children and the staff members that work with my children. I appreciate that when I drop my children off and when I pick my children up that Tom and Tammy's cars are always in the parking lot. I appreciate that Tom, Tammy, and the staff know my child's name and that the kids in the school run to hug them. I can accept that no one school is perfect but speaking as a long term family of the school the plus' far outweigh any negatives. MID has been a blessing to our family and to my children.
