Broostone was horrendous. To sum it up, the curriculum is sub-par, that even my child's younger sibling was able to complete her work. Even some public school curriculum is better. My child was not challenged and teachers became defensive when I pointed this out. Further, the discipline was amped way up. Now, I am a firm believer in discipline but this was almost militant. My well-behaved child got "red marks" for even the slightest infractions. At some point she began to feel like maybe she was a bad kid. Yet, at conferences she was praised at how well behaved she was. Huh? Talk about sending a child mixed signals. Further, parents have no voice since there is no PTO or other outlet to express concerns. Parents are generally kept out of the loop. Essentially, the sponsors and administration seem to think that they are the parents as they inappropriately make decisions for your child without any parental input. This has to be what at school-to-prison pipeline looks like, with the diluted education and unnecessarily harsh discipline. And the (unspoken but clearly underlying) assumption that because many of the students are poor and of color--"urban" they called it, that there couldn't possibly be caring and involved parents or positive role models in their lives was frustrating. Sponsors and administration carry on with this overwhelmingly paternalistic attitude of trying to save children, my child included, that really don't need to be "saved" from bad homes. Perhaps being in a financial bind and a person of color meant that my child didn't come from a caring, Christian, two-parent household according to Brookstone. Be prepared to be treated like a stereotype. The atmosphere is so condescending if you happen to be financially strapped and/or a person of color. I could give several specific instances but I'll refrain. The fact that it's supposed to be Christian just seemed like an insult as I was not treated like a co-laborer in my child's education or spiritual growth, but rather made to feel like an unenlightened and poor beggar. I liken it to receiving a bowl of slop and a hearty pat on the head then told to go and sit down and shut up with the rest of the parents. After all, it's the SPONSORS that pay our children's tuition--and NOT the parents. Therefore, according to Brookstone, we haven't earned an opportunity to speak and apparently don't exist.
