The Barstow School Ratings & Reviews

I'm an international student at Barstow from Beijing and I want to say that this is an amazing school. I certainly learned a lot in the relatively short amount of time I was there. I don't know where to start on the good points so I'll simply write some common complaints that the freshman class of 2020 level.1. The 'Ethics and Leadership' online course is... disliked. Strongly. The course has often been criticized for its inconsistency (assignments are given sporadically), lack of useful lessons, and VoiceThread - the website which students used for the class - often had technical issues regarding video uploads and login difficulties. The class was also entirely participation based. Enthusiasm was always low throughout the class, something augmented by the time zone differences and tepid questions presented.2. The Ancient World History journal assignment. Students have to fill out a journal with entries and the entries are graded on several factors. However, the rubric isn't very clear as to what factors they are. For an example, 'expresses critical thinking' really meant 'asks three or more questions to reflect involvement with class content'. Another low point of the journal was when our instructor had to take leave in the middle of the school year for the birth of a child (completely reasonable but our grades still suffered). Most journal entries are notes of chapters and questions presented in class, and whilst our teacher was gone, question prompts for journal entries were hard to come upon. (I recieved 77% for that particular journal and by comparison, the next lowest grade I received was 97%). Because of the unclear rubric, several students feel the instructor simply favors some students above others. The third issue seems to be endemic to only a few students, but it is worth mentioning. The math course I took (Algebra II H) was blazing fast. It was extremely difficult for me to absorb everything taught. The teacher was often not there at odd school hours because of his family and the baseball team (totally understandable).Everything that I did not mention was absolutely amazing, the teachers were supportive and understanding, etc. My Freshman English teacher is the most fantastic instructor I have ever had the privilege to study under.(PS there's a lot of freedom to choose your courses here, I'll end it here since I hit the character limit).

The cost of this school does not match up to the expectations one would have, when paying such a larger sum of money. There are better alternatives in the area where quality and cost are equal. The Freshman Geometry class is a joke. Kids are expected to teach themselves, in essence. A college prep school should over emphasize the need for math and prepare these kids for ACT/SAT as well as successful futures, it doesn't happen at the entry level of H.S. and parents/students are forced to wait till Sophomore year and beyond to get the equivalent math education, to the money you spend. Too the college counselor is seen as a threat to the kids vs. heir advocate. Barstow need to up their education game and renew their upper school staff with freshers.

I attended through high school and Barstow did a great job cultivating my interests and preparing me for college. They even created a tailor made math course to futher my education in calculous.

Barstow has a middle school English teacher who can't spell! This is not OK. There are many qualified people out there who could do that job.

Middle school is excellent. High school is awesome. Do not waste your money on the lower school. More than half the kids in math have tutors and the teachers are mean. No clue about child development. Writing program is excellent and no one is cut from the sports teams.
