Skyview Community Middle School Ratings & Reviews

Adults in this school are advised to not interfere when they see bullying, teasing and other forms of harassment whether in the halls, lunchroom or classrooms. All last year my son witnessed kids teasing other kids and only once saw a teacher speak up in the moment. The teacher said something without shaming the student. Using this as a teaching moment showed the students that this behavior was unacceptable. One classroom scenario: kids teased another about a hairstyle. Most kids in the room could hear, but teacher ignored it. The victim asked teacher if he could move. The teacher agreed but didn’t say one word to the class or to those doing the teasing. The teacher ignored the cruelty, which showed the class that this behavior would be allowed. No one knew if the teacher would deal with this afterward. The practice that adults will not step in was clearly shown. My son was harassed, which is how we came to find out about this practice. The vice principal insisted this is not a policy, but the result is the same whether recommendation or policy. Kids who tease are not corrected or given positive examples, and kids who are teased feel they are on their own. The counselor explained to my son that the adults are not to interfere in situations, basically telling him he was on his own - unless of course he named the kids who were bugging him. Then adults would have private conversations with the bullies. Of course, my son would not name anyone. He felt no adult would ever say anything, except for one teacher, and he was harassed in the lunchroom, halls, after school, and in the classroom. He also saw other kids being harassed and having to fend for themselves, even if a teacher or volunteer or aid was standing there to see and hear the entire exchange. Our son will continue here because he had taken time away from public school so his new friends are extra important to him. I hope he will find his own voice against those who bug him, since it is clear the adults will not support him or others in the moment of harassment. The school’s practice of not interfering is against everything we read about bullying, harassment, speaking out, etc. in parenting and the regular press. The adults at Skyview foster a stifling and dysfunctional atmosphere.

The lockers are ridiculously small; more of a slot really. They are 99% unusable!! Something should be done sooner rather than later. Either update them or remove them altogether!! MLW grandma of student

Terrible. My daughter, who has some "quirky" behaviors was bullied from the first day of 6th grade to the last. The school said that they were addressing it, but it kept happening. Other students told us that our daughter was pushed and shoved down the hallway by another group of kids, She has been poked, shoved, and verbally assaulted by groups of kids. Heartbreaking.

Horrible just horrible. How in my little girls first year of middle school turn from super smart to wearing inappropriate clothes, make-up and talks like she has no parents. Same goes with my son. He was in 8th grade math and reading in his 6th grade year then in 7th grade, he sags his pants, swears, comes home and talks rudefully to his siblings and his own mother. If you have a son or daughter, I'd recommend moving them at the start of next year or asap.

My friend went to this school and wanted me to write this about it: This is a bad school. You can see this just be looking at the test scores. Too much "ghetto" stuff going on, and the girls here act like promiscuous teenagers, even the 11 year olds.
