Zeeland East High School Ratings & Reviews

We have had 2 children go through ZE. Both with very different learning styles. From our experience if you are a strong student academically you do well mostly because you drive yourself. There are some teachers who have the insight to see that not every student fits into a box. But most with our experience is that the teacher is there to teach a curriculum. If you can't grasp it then you struggle. With both our kids we found teachers at ZW to be better at stepping outside of the box and helping the student reach their potential. Neither of our children were discipline problems so I don't know how they handle that aspect. The overall atmosphere from fellow students is not the most positive. And leadership at the time was not very good at follow through with bullying issues. Or ways to build up an atmosphere of students respecting other students.

I would have to guess that these are "student reviews" of the school system. I'm not a student of ZPS, I am a parent of three ZPS students and have the added experience of raised children that went to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas school systems. Yes there are special interest groups, clicks and some intolerance toward others here in Zeeland. But I must acknowledge that I have seen true hatred and intolerance for diversity in other communities. I choose to live in Zeeland because of the people, the facilities and the teachers; I could just have easily choosen differently. I do and will continue to highly endorse the Zeeland school district now that the last of my children will be graduating this evening. Thank you all of the Zeeland High School Faculty and Staff!

As a current student, there are some things I love about the ZPS system, and some things I can not stand. I was priate schooled thrugh eigth grade, and my transfer into thr system went very easily. The staff is a broad mix of kind-hearted, dedicated and passionate well as insensitive, athletic minded people. Zeeland has an incredible arts program that is entirely student run and one of the best in the state, but funding is currently being threatened on the arts sphere of the building and isnt supported by most of the students or staff...only solidifying the sports frenzy. Acedemics are either hot or cold: you are either put on a slacker route to graduate or are pushed beyond healthy boundaries. I as an acedemically gifted snd by all other means 'normal' and 'healthy' student (29 on my act first time thru and a solid grou of friends) was forced to spend two weeks in a psychiatric facility to cope with the stress and demands put on me. I have had one incredible experience in a class involving a highly dedicated teacher and close-knit class that molded my life incredibly positively, but I have also had teachers that made learning very difficult.

This school follows a caste system where if you aren't involved in sports or extracurricular activities, you're a second-class pupil. Also, if your son or daughter is struggling with grades, it's automatically the student's fault, regardless of possible disability, and they try to get the student to agree to get into their Summit program which is a behavior-modification micromanagement program for juvenile delinquents. This trend has been going on for over 15 years in Zeeland Public Schools. If your kid is getting bad grades, they won't tell you about your rights to psychological testing or providing special education accommodations either, and if you do try to get them for your child, they will fight you every step of the way. If you can, enroll in Black River Public Schools, even if it means driving your kid to school every day, the difference in how they handle special education matters, discipline, athletics vs non athletics, is a night and day difference.

I attended this school, only to learn the horror stories about it are worse than they seem. There is aboslutely no diversity here. None. Whatsoever. If you're different, you're bullied. And if you haven't attended since Kindergarten... well, have fun making friends. It is rare to come across accepting people in this school. If you look different or dress different, you're doomed. The school has a children of the corn thing going on. 'Shun the non-believers!' And trust me, if you don't wear the top name of the brand clothing, you're also doomed. The teachers only communicate with kids who do sports, and don't communicate often with the kids that may need some emotional or educational support. There are a lot of fights too, and half the time, there was never security to break it up. And yes, therer are no security guards who walk those halls.
