Arbor Preparatory High School Ratings & Reviews

My daughter has attended this school since 9th grade. This year 2016-2017 school year has been the most challenging she is currently in the 11th grade. My daughter has had FIVE different algebra teachers in one school year! This is unacceptable. Why is teacher rentention so hard for this particular class? The principal quit with two months left in the school year and regardless to any of the reasons all of these disruptions affect the students and their learning. Overall I think the school is a good school, but this year has been challenging to say the least.

The teachers are fine and the students get along well enough but the school gives you absolutly no information about anything and relies on the badly draw posters in the hallways to inform you. I didn't even know we had a winter dance til 2 days before when one of the juniors told me (my first year). Honestly, as a freshman, I knew nothing because they told us nothing. They expected you to already know. Bad experience overall.

Review from student of four years:Terrible administration, great teachers for the most part when they stay. Curriculum is challenging when the teacher actually cares about their job. Teachers often leave and join like a revolving door year by year. And there is no more consistency in the principle position. Discipline is often reduced to scare tactics and the school usually seemed to care more about dress code rather than delivering an education. Girls are not allowed to wear leggings on dress down days but the school wouldn't say a thing if a boy worse a muscle shirt. Just as another example of the obnoxious discipline at this school the principle threatened to call the police on me after I had refused to move because she did not want to justify her actions of forcing a whole table of students to move. I attended the school for four years and from my experience the other students are great, bullying is not an issue. If they could demonstrate any type of consistency in their employment I would leave a higher review but it honestly felt like buying the first version of a new smartphone. College Advisory is a joke, we spent three years creating a "college portfolio" just for it to be scrapped on our senior year. It is nothing more than a homeroom, do not let them con you into believing otherwise. The school refers to their students like young men and women in their recruiting process but treats them like children. The school is just not good but I could see what they are trying to do. I just cannot recommend this school, it is a good idea but it is not executed well.

I have two students at the school. We live in the Ann Arbor school district which has a reputation for great schools, but chose this charter school instead. I will admit my daughter's freshman year was rocky -- APHS's second year of existence. She is now a senior and it is MUCH improved. Great new principal and assistant principal. Indeed there has been some teacher turnover but this is sometimes a good thing; ineffective teachers don't last long unlike at traditional schools with powerful teacher unions. As for the grading, I'm not a fan of standards based grading (SBG) but I will live with it. The rest of the school makes up for it.

This school is average at best. The grading system is slightly wonky and most teachers leave after a year anyway. It's honestly hard to get comfortable at a school where the teachers and the principle change every year. This being my last year, I'm honestly not surprised they changed the end date of the school year and made us start school earlier. The students seem to only use this school as a stepping stone onto another school and most classes cripple your gpa anyway. AP classes seem more like extra work than anything else. During classes all you do is memorize, take the test and lose the knowledge because you have too much to learn. Not to mention that if you don't constantly have your shirt tucked in you get a referral or if you're wearing the wrong type of something you have to disrupt your education and go to the office because of it. I'm surprised we still had a graduating class these past few years with the requirements to graduate. Most students have to stay up to just barely finish their five hours of homework. Overall, Arbor Prep is decent but could do better in several different ways.
