Good things: 1. Good concept & opportunity. 2. Paid for by public school dollars. No cost for classes. 3. High school equivalent classes seemed to be good & appropriate. Not good things: 1. Parent involvement has been slim to none since it began 3 years ago. 2. Very limited communication to parents directly. Parents & students are sometimes given inconsistent information. 3. Mentoring could use guidance, support, education and flexibility. 4. There could be better assistance, support, proactive planning and general organization/structure by administration. There is an undercurrent of negativity towards parents instead of a collaborative one. Many problems/administrative coordination items ended up being handled the student or parent to accomplish them in a reasonable amount of time or by deadlines. Overall, my student has done well academically, although attributed to my student. I was disappointed that improvements, procedures, suggestions, etc have failed to be implemented as promised. My recommendation would be to check out the program, but to stay informed at all times and keep in mind that some things will require you to do the legwork.

I have been a Great Lakes Bay Early College program (GLBEC) student for the past two years. I was reluctant to apply at first because I did not want to leave high school and all my friends, but after attending an informational meeting, I decided it was an opportunity I could not let pass me by. The program is worth it for the following reasons: 1) It is FREE college. They pay for your classes and your books (~13 credits per semester) 2) I am able to still be a captain of my team at my old high school, be president of the GLBEC Leadership program, and be a straight-A college student at SVSU and I only just turned 17. Balancing everything is very possible. 3) I had a fear of losing my friends from my old school, but have come to find that this is no problem at all. In fact, I've gotten closer with them, made friends in the program from many different schools and have become more confident and social in college. 4) The program teachers are great mentors and work with you closely. Professors, once you get into your college courses, have respect for you, as well as college students. All college students I've told about what I do said they wish they had known about this program.
