So far it’s been great. My daughter is only first grade and attended kindergarten there, so this review is based on that. The teachers speak great Japanese and if you want you child to be Japanese/English bilingual, this is the place to do it for free in Metro Detroit. Very impressed with the school so far

Don't be fooled by the Grades report as this school is too new to effectively measure--and the details of the school are out of date. The school provides K-6th and has way more than 120 students now. This year there were 3 Kindergartens. My children are thriving at Niji and it's providing them with not only a one-of-a-kind bilingual, bi-cultural education, but also engaging them in stimulating, rigorous academic investigations. It is difficult, for sure in the beginning, while the kids get their bearings, but worth the effort and worth the wait. They're gaining the understanding that the world is a big and diverse place while learning everything any child does in elementary school, and more. The academic standards are higher than usual for a public school as they follow Japanese standards in order to keep the children from Japan school-ready for if/when they return to Japan. This is an immersion program, not a direct-learning, direct-teaching program so the bilingual education looks different than if they were to sit in a Japanese class learning from a book. Both my children have tested at or above grade level in every subject from K on. The math standards are a STEM parent's dream. I do wish there was more support for English-speaking parents, but the kids are doing well.

My kids love it here! They love their teachers, the staff is warm and engaged! We are so lucky! My kids were raised in an English only home and their grandparents are surprised when we go back to Japan to visit. They say their Japanese is perfect (much better than mine they say!!)

"The quality of school has continued on a downward slide since it first opened in 2014. It started with 6 native Japanese teachers for grades K-4, and now spreads 5 Japanese teachers over 10 sections of grades K-5. The teachers are paid less than the rest of the district, and so many have quit, my child had 3 different Japanese teachers in the space of 5 months last year! They have started hiring non-native teachers of Japanese, and allowing the American teachers to use Japanese language to communicate with the students--which goes against what ""immersion"" education is supposed to be about. The teachers who are left work hard, but the district is constantly broke, and is closing 2 more elementary schools this year. The school and PTA send home info on 1 fundraiser after another, but that's clearly not helping fill the staffing gap. They keep talking about offering 6th grade, but it won't happen again in 2017-18."

Wonderful teachers and supporting parents. Great music program. I made the best decision. Only two classes per grade. Very diversed; English only kids, few Japanese only kids, and many bilinguals too.Great music program. After school activities are great too; African drums, Karate, Art, and Chess club.
