Black River Public School Ratings & Reviews

Black River has some excellent teachers, but if your child isn't at the honors level, your child will feel the minority. They do offer after school support, and some resources, but disappointed that the school lacks diversity in student learning styles and levels. Also, disappointed in the principals lack of response to my requests to meet about my child's struggles with a particular Spanish teacher, after efforts with staying after and tutoring. The solution was to just drop the class, which was disappointing since her effort and some progress was there. We spent one year at Black River, but will not be returning. Social opportunities and athletics are limited, and definately more of a fine arts school.

What makes me sad about this school is that it is masquerading as a public school. I used to believe that its "lottery" system was fair and was a true lottery, but I've come to find out from other parents that not only does BR screen their students (you are asked to submit transcripts when you apply), but they also call teachers from your child's current school to ask them questions about your child to see if they are a "good fit". How this is allowed for a supposed "public" school is beyond me. Of course you can have great test scores if the majority of your kids come from homes with educated parents who have high expectations and will support their children and the school itself. BR is discriminatory and in the end will hurt (mainly) the public schools in the area who accept ALL students and families. I also think it is a fallacy to believe that BR is the only "public" school with high expectations and a heavy homework load. It depends largely on the teacher and their expectations. It is no more of a college prep school that West Ottawa, Holland, Saugatuck or other surrounding schools.

I love that they focus on the child, not the group. They see each student as an individual and teach accordingly. They seem to truly care about the students as well.

I have children in both elementary and high school levels for this school, and although I would give the high school a high rating, I have not been overly impressed with the amount of general coldness toward parents at the elementary levels, nor the lack of supervision that I have witnessed several times. It's really unfortunate, as the academic programming is exceptional, however if there is no care or understanding for the social abilities of students at the various ages, nor any parameters set in place knowing that Montessori breeds more independence and thus more rebellion at times, the teachers and school should be equipped for this. Because of the elementary, I have to give the school an average rating. I'm sure it will get better as the school excepts more parent feedback, and actually does something to change some of the flaws.

I have been incredibly pleased with Black River. My now 3rd grader has been at Black River since Kindergarten. There is so much communication between parents and teachers, and she is above grade level in every subject.
