Grand River Preparatory High School Ratings & Reviews

I'm a student here. Just recently, a student expressed his view online that this school is racist, with a picture of the school website. He was suspended for 6 months and accused of hacking the website (which he didn't) because they couldn't suspend him for speaking his opinion. Another student (an asian american) used a racial slur (the n- word), and only received a one day suspension. For a school that claims to be not racist, their recent behavior has been the exact opposite.

I have two sons at this school. We have had nothing but a positive experience. I have a student that has an IEP and I am amazed at the support ALL the staff gives him. All students can excel here if they choose. Koree Woodward has been an excellent leader. Grand River has grown under her leadership. I am so very proud to be a parent of students at Grand River.

I don't understand how Great Schools gives this school an 8 out of 10. Look at the facts! Look at the testing results on the page: it is a 'College Prep' school that prepares students less for college than the average school. Ridiculous! Keep in mind they have a Special Ed department that is one teacher so that they don't have "those kids" dragging down test scores. They have NO RESOURCES for ELL students. The cut the Latin program and they don't have orchestra, which is listed as a class. The teachers and administrators are fine, but the company running the school, PrepNet- a FOR PROFIT charter school company, only cares about filling a rich, white, millionaire's (J.C. Huizinga) pockets with our tax dollars. For this reason teacher turnover is at least a quarter of the staff every year because they all want to be at schools that actually care about students. I know full-time teachers who have left to take part-time spots or temporary teaching positions just to get out. Last year they had two head principals resign in A MONTH! One went to teach at another school and the other took an assistant principal position just to get out. When students have a great school like East Kentwood a mile and half away, which actually supports its students with special ed, sports, clubs, and four different language options, it blows my mind that any parent sends their children to Grand River. Grand River is a school for ignorant people.A bunch of 5 star ratings on this site given on the same day? Sounds like more manipulation of the data by PrepNet and Grand River.

I don't want to go to college. You have to wear a uniform that's REALLY restrictive, the computers don't even have Microsoft Office, and so much more. A requirement for graduation is to be accepted to two colleges, and how our society works is that you're expected to go to college. You can't get out of that, and the classes they offer aren't good anyway. You have to take certain classes, even if you don't want to use that class in your job. If I could switch schools, I would.
