Our Lady Of Sorrows Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

I would not invest into this school due to the administration changes that have transpired over the past few years. Currently, the administration is young and lack enough experience in these positions. They are just starting their own families ΓÇô limiting personal parenting and school experiences along with the ability to identify in much of the K-8 and older child. There is an absence of faith and partnership in their management style. The supervision is nonexistent to ensure administration is living up to the Our Lady of Sorrows Mission. OLS appears to be turning into a public school with high tuition - keeping church and school separate in far too many ways. In my familyΓÇÖs experience over the years we have learned this is a very cliquish and judgmental atmosphere. Some families seem to think they are superior to the others and are treated better than the rest of the school community. This appears to be based on the size of their donations - or their parentΓÇÖs donations - or by the involvement that they are granted within the school or church. These families and the staffsΓÇÖ children are the ones that benefit here. They are very exclusive and do not help outside their circle. Your child can have the skills, leadership, and potential - but only these select familiesΓÇÖ children will gain considerations in sports and for positions in the school ΓÇô regardless of their childΓÇÖs qualifications. We have encountered a few excellent and caring teachers over the years ΓÇô however - there seems to be too many teachers that are unwilling to do what is needed to help out and make a positive experience for the benefit of your child. They have the attitude that they know best and your child should fit into their ideas and plans. Simply - they do not care about everyone here! It is a self-serving atmosphere and they present a false image. OLS does do nice things for outside the community, but seems to be more of a way to keep up an appearance. As it is evident caring, helping out, including their classmates. etc. is not taught to the children in many of the classrooms or by leadership. These are a few of the reasons the quality of the catholic education has been compromised at OLS.

My child received an average education in the several years at OLS. The classes are geared toward the average student, and the excessive homework mainly constitutes busy work. The math program is behind the public schools, and there is too much of a focus on rote learning to the exclusion of higher level, critical thinking skills. The administration & teachers were mainly neglectful, then reactive & inconsistent regarding disciplinary issues (including a fair amount of bullying). The administration, teachers, parents & students have a superiority complex & repeatedly assert that they are better in every way and speak derisively about the public schools. Overall, my student received a FAR better education in the public schools which has a more rigorous curriculum for advanced students & consistent behavioral policies. I did like two things about Sorrows very much. There were a few very good teachers who were both rigorous & kind. Secondly, there was a good focus in the school on service projects & sharing with those less fortunate. However, aside from the service projects, the students were mean to their fellow students who did not have expensive, name-brand shoes, and the moms were cliquey. I was disappointed at the generally un-Christian behavior. Much room for improvement.

I had high expectations for the school, sending 2 of my kids there, and those expectations have been exceeded the past few years. A new leadership/administration team came in 2 years ago, and some of the negative issues that had started to creep in have been addressed and the school is back to being at the forefront of curriculum and most important to me, putting kids on the right path to becoming young adults through faith, education and leading by example, to be responsible, well-rounded christians. There is a very clear rubric that the school follows, allowing them to be pro-active, notifying parents of potential issues so you can address them at home or work with faculty to resolve before they become problems. The faculty and staff truly care about the students and foster a catholic community, being able to teach lessons of right and wrong based on the teachings of the church. The administration and staff are very approachable, and are great christian examples in the community for kids to look to. Unfortunately, a lot of the negative comments you may hear come from a small group of 'helicopter parents' who want things done for their kids and believe they can do no wrong, or those who believe paying to send your child to school allows you to make the rules. This is a small minority, but they do make the most noise, so if you do not want your children to be held accountable for their actions and learn responsibility, this may not be the place for your family/kids. I have found Our Lady of Sorrows to be an amazing place that has fostered my family's growth in education and faith, and would highly recommend the school.

Though this used to be a better school environment, in the last 3-5 years it has become overcrowded, under supervised, and disorganized. Administration turnover has been high (rarely a good sign), the drop off/pick up procedure is an accident waiting to happen,(people crossing car line, little oversight of who picks up kids because they are all intermingling in the parking lot with teachers distracted, few spots to park if you chose to walk up), large and growing class size, ratio similar to public schools--if your looking for polite children with kind behavior, this is not the place--the undersupervised playground has many "blind spots" and dangerous playground equipment and the staff who are there do not circulate. There is mean behavior and exclusion that goes unspotted due to this. Preschool and K are a more positive experience due to the program being housed in a smaller building. This review is not meant to accomplish anything other than saving parents who expect a safe, kind, faith-based environment from being disappointed. We chose parochial/private for a more personal, kind, disciplined setting with examples of Christian morals and role models. We found little if this. The academics are present and the homework and tests are fast paced, but it can also cause anxiety if you don't have above average learners. Overall a frustrating, disappointing school experience.

There are some great teachers and some that are not so good. We get tons of homework, and sometimes I feel that it is to compensate for the lack of instruction or inability to provide adequate instruction b/c the teachers have to handle disruptive kids. The Vice Principal is terrific and handles disciplinary problems quickly. OLS is highly focused on recruiting new students and fundraising. During 2013-14 school year, it seemed that we missed 10 days of school. Yet, they pulled the kids out of class to make Rainbow looms to send to Jimmy Kimmel. Great PR for the school but a waste of class instruction time. In its haste to recruit new students, OLS has been letting in some kids who have no business at a Catholic school. One new girl told my daughter that her dad said "Catholicism is the Devil's religion". Her family sent her there b/c she was receiving no discipline at home and expected the school to do it for them. I would check very carefully b/f sending kids to OLS. Great school in many ways, but hard if you don't fit in (e.g. wear expensive shoes, think highly of yourself, etc).
