The Boggs School is an authentic learning community. Our children have access to excellent academic resources such as math corps and 826 Michigan; they are also given opportunities to participate in academic and cultural enrichment programs like STEAM NEXUS, Mosaic, Spanish emersion, and traditional African drum and dance--just to name a few--that they may not otherwise have access to. The Boggs school community is committed to holistic education and it is evidenced in the work each and every day. I absolutely love and am committed to the James and Grace Lee Boggs School.

We love so much about Boggs--its smart, generous, and dedicated teachers; its clear and focused mission of nurturing creative, thinkers who care for one another and their communities; place-based curriculum that integrates science and social studies; its wonderful library and librarian; a tight network of families; its visionary, communicative and approachable leadership team; small class sizes; the focus on the arts and physical activity (they have recess!). Other things we appreciate are no uniforms; free breakfast, lunch, and light dinner; and after school programs and care that are exceptional. No school is perfect but the Boggs leadership team is aware of the school's areas of growth and are constantly working to address these areas. We feel so fortunate to be part of this wonderful school.

If you're looking for a well-oiled corporate machine of a school, Boggs is not for you. But if you're looking to be part of an educational community -- of young people, families, and educators -- who are working together to figure out the messy and impossibly difficult work of raising children to take their place in the struggle for justice, then you'll find a space of home at Boggs. We are all figuring things out as we go at this school, and that can understandably be frustrating for some. But we are all learning by doing and, rather than having all problems solved for them, the children are learning to be "solutionaries," as Grace Lee Boggs encouraged all of us to be.We came to Boggs from a "well-performing," majority-white suburban school that our son dreaded attending each day. Mornings were torture and we worried about him all day. Those days of worry are over now that he's at Boggs because he is loved and cared for in that building. Someone greets him at the door with a smile each morning, and the kids are working hard to learn how to take good care of each other. The school will continue to struggle toward its ideals and its goals -- as all schools must. The task of raising and growing our children is never easy, so any school that has it all figured out must be doing everything wrong. We are blessed to be a part of the Boggs school community and are glad to be engaged in all the messiness and struggle of educating our kids as a collective.
