As a parent of two students at this school it has become overwhelmingly clear that though the student base is 99% African American, the staff does not reflect a fraction of that diversity. The willingness to work with the diverse community is simply not consistent with schools historically in this area. Specifically fathers are not encouraged to participate in the activities of the students every day learning, conflict resolution, curriculum adjustment, and adaptive preparation and techniques for comprehensive development. The school does not address testing students for potential special needs assistance. I have asked for an IEP for years and have never received it. They attempted to handle it in house without connecting to National support for special needs assessment and following standards established with clearly projected outcomes. Leaving the child without understanding and possibly without critical help. Teachers are not willing to discuss action steps to better develop academic standards for the children. Conflict resolution does not resolve the issue because the teachers do not want to get involved to the level of bringing the parents together to completely dissolved the issues. The condescending and arrogant attitude of staff in this school's leadership has left a bitter taste in my mouth and though they claim academic supremacy community relations, and proper goal setting actions and attitudes are absent from the mark that defines schools which appropriately transition the student through the education process. I am removing my children from this school. I have been trying for years to come to some kind of understanding and involvement that matters. Even if the academics of a school failed to reach the highest goals and standards set up by the state and federal government, to be able to address other areas are sometimes far more important in child development. A proper and positive self image as the child looks at his/her surroundings in search of equal opportunity and examples of clear community trust and involvement is paramount. An elementary school is not a monolith. It is merely part of a great continuum of educational care. Therefore we have to be more well-rounded in our approach to education.

Detroit Merit Academy is a school of excellence. The administrative staff is easily accessible. The teachers are caring and understanding of all the students. The student have the opportunity to learn through real world experiences, field trips, in-school programs, after school tutoring and extra-curricular activities. DMA even has the best Latch-Key program around. Latch-Key provides the students the time to build life-long friendships that are often hard to establish during the school hours and instructional time. DMA faces one challenge. DMA needs a physical education facility. They have a great physical education teacher (Ms. Riley) but she faces challenges with implementing her program because she doesn't have a gym. Ms. Riley makes sure all of her students receive the proper hours of movement and large motor activities with the space she has but her program could really be GREAT if she had a gym.
