Hartland Lakes Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

I had 2 children attend Lakes Elementary, kindergarten through 4th grade. The leadership at this school is top notch. The teachers are all enthusiastic about learning. Every teacher we encountered was kind, compassionate, professional and amazing. Both of my children achieved very high marks on their M-STEP tests. I would highly recommend this school!

Hartland Lakes Elementary looks good on the outside and quite charming on the inside. However, beneath the thin, aesthetically-pleasing curtain lies a different reality. My student attended first grade here and was invited to attend a lunch-in with the principal for new students. My child is not special needs and is, in fact, on the opposite end of the spectrum. Therefore, she knew, even at her young age, that when the principal (during the lunch-in) asked each individual child how they liked their school experience at Lakes, she would take advantage of this opportunity to express her disapproval of the relentless bullying she was subjected-to on a daily basis during recess. The response from the female principal (who, I have been told, has now been replaced) was that "No, this could not be possible, because, if it was, it would have already been taken-care-of." She then when on to ask my daughter if she had reported the bullying to her teacher. My student replied that she had indeed reported it every day, but nothing was done and it was increasing in severity. In fact, the bullying was so bad that when she crossed the monkey bars during recess, another student twisted her leg until she fell and received severe damage to her foot, which, at this time (the event occurred around 4 years ago) has not fully healed, even after therapy. With that being said, I removed my student from this school after less than half the school year and chose to home-school for the rest of the year due to her injuries. Overall, this is a sad excuse for any school, especially a public school housing young children. I do not recommend this school for any child.

Lakes Elementary is a great school where the staff is great at what they do. That said, you are the best advocate for your child, and you are an important part of your child's educational team. If you have any concerns, I suggest first working with your child's teacher and then go to Principal Smither if you don't get a resolution to your satisfaction (but you probably will!). Mrs. Smither is very conscientious about the needs of all students and cares very deeply for them. I can't say enough great things about her. I also recommend getting involved in the school however your schedule allows. It helps your child when you build a relationship with your child's teacher, and it helps when you can get to know the students in your child's class a bit too!

I pulled my son out of his kindergarten class there b/c the size of the class was too large, the teacher was too rigid in her expectations of young children, there was a perjorative view of children who don't fit into the mold, and my child's faults were the focus rather than his strengths. This is not the way to encourage young children who are being introduced to the school system.

Lakes is an excellent school. The administration and staff are positive people. who care about kids, and allow for individual differences. As a former teacher and administrator, I am happy that my grandson is at Lakes.
