Harlan Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

Its a good school but has some serious issues. The parents at Harlan are very clique, especially the PTA moms. Way too much power is given to the PTA, as a not PTA mom your kids clearly have disadvantages. School has a very strong inner parent circle and they let you and your kids feel that you are not wanted and obviously get excluded. As an immigrant family, it was not easy for us to deal with getting included. At the end we just did not feel very welcomed, our kids never really got included and invited, so we decided to move to a more open minded community. Some teachers at Harlan are truly wonderful and are very missed. Weak leadership, hopefully with the new principal this becomes better.

I love this elementary school and am glad we found a home in this district so our kids can attend it. Fantastic teachers and staff. I do have one MAJOR gripe though that prevents me from giving this school 5 stars. The parking lot and morning traffic management is atrocious. If you don't take your kids to school 20 mins early, be prepared to be late. It takes me longer to drop my kids off than it does for me to get there. They have two lanes that round-abouts around the front of the school. The outside lane is dedicated to parents who are dropping their kids off. The inside lane is for parents who want to park and walk their kids to class. This is where the problems begin... the cars in the drop-off lane start congesting the inside lane to either skip in front of another car, or make a mad dash to leave. This forces the parents who want to park and walk their kids to class to be stuck waiting for the inside lane to clear up. This morning, it took me 7 minutes to park my car. It only takes me 4 mins to drive there. Absurd. Harlan needs to direct the morning traffic like they do after school. Outside lane cars should be staying in that lane and circle around to the rear parking lot then exit. This would keep the inside lane clear for parents who want to park. Also, they should only allow temporary parking for the spaces in the round-about. Parents who are staying for an extended time should be forced to park only in the rear lot. Not a very hard thing to do Harlan. Would make everyone's lives easier in the morning and also reduce the amounts of tardy kids.

Dr. Thompson, our Principal, is a fantastic leader. Her attitude and direction of focusing on the children is visible throughout the halls and playgrounds, as demonstrated by caring teachers, staff, and students. I interviewed several (more than 15) principals when I was making home buying decisions, and am so thankful my children get to go to Harlan. Derby.....that's another story.

I am a parent who places a very strong emphasis on academics. When I hear parents remark, "oh, it's just kindergarten", it makes me cringe. I moved to the district for the schools, and I was on the verge on sending my child to one of many prestigious private schools in the area. I m glad I changed my mind. My son just completed extended-day kindergarten at Harlan, and I am very pleased with the quality of his teacher, organization, caring for the children, exposure to technology, and strong weight on academics. I believe his teacher prepared the entire class to almost a second grade level! Even more, the principal (Ms. Thompson) is simply wonderful. She is accessible, witty, caring, loves the children, balanced, and fair. The librarian (Ms. Stayer) is also phenomenal. Additionally, although there is little diversity at the school, Harlan is the only elementary school in the district that has its own African-American Family Network subsidiary (from the district-wide organization), so the parents are highly involved, as well as a Diversity Committee. The only concern I have with Harlan is the level of involvement of parents in the PTA. Thus, do yourself a favor and check out Harlan.
