Lakewood Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

Lakewood is a fantastic school, and I would highly recommend it. The Principal, Eddie Latour, is amazing and we have loved every teacher that my children have had over the years. In my opinion, Lakewood does not score as well as other AAPS elementary schools because of the diversity in the student population (we have a number of students where English is not their first language and they do not always test as well as native English speakers). I love the diversity at the school and the exposure that my children get to other languages, cultures, etc. Lakewood is also a wonderful community; we are very fortunate to have so many involved and wonderful families.

The teachers and administrators are so dedicated to this school. I could not be happier with how all three of my kids have been treated and have accelerated here. One of my children require additional help from support staff and they are amazing. Everyone goes above and beyond.

Over crowded classrooms and the new principal let there be 29 students in a first grade classroom. He is coming with a middle school background who needs to have more classes on working with elementary. Don't feel they are being honest with the parents when a kindergartner is working behind and they pass him to first instead of repeating kindergarten where he was not ready. They need to do testing of children entering kindergarten to make sure they are ready. Also, when I have called the principal doesn't return calls or emails. I have been a former teacher and I know how they system works. Someone outside needs to be monitoring this school.

I have 2 kids enrolled at Lakewood (K and 3rd). I've been thrilled with all of their teachers. I volunteer in a 5th grade classroom once a week and impressed with what I see from the educators and staff. I have also been very happy with the level of commitment and participation from other parents which makes it feel like a real community, not just a school. The level of communication from the school is consistent and appropriate.

"30 kids in a first grade classroom with only one teacher! Enough said. Many of us feel for the kids and parents who are currently experiencing this overcrowded situation. No matter how good the teacher, that many kids in a classroom with one adult does not provide optimal learning. Many fear this will continue to be the trend and many are looking for different options. Kids deserve better. Teachers care but it's not possible to ""focus"" on all of the kids and their needs. What's even more disturbing is that they say they have openings for in district transfers for next year's 2nd grade class."
