I love Compass Academy because I get to see all of the social growth in our students. So many of the students that start at Compass are socially awkward and have a really tough time making friends. But we teach lessons on empathy, compassion, expectations of friendships and other affective/social lessons that really help our students build great friendships. We have so many after school social events, like laser tag, bowling, going to water parks, and holiday parties that let students put what they learned into practice. That's my greatest joy, when I see these relationships develop and the students become more comfortable with themselves and their peers. At that point I know that the students will have the life long friendships that their teachers, families and they've wanted and deserved for so long.

One of the things I love most about Compass Academy is their ability to differentiate instruction. Each child has a unique academic plan that identifies their goals for the year. Teachers are able to identify students' strengths and weaknesses and teach according to needs, rather than simply following a set scope and sequence.

My daughter with HFA is doing wonderfully at Compass Academy. She started in 6th grade when the school opened its doors and is 9th grade now - we have every intention of staying until she graduates 12th grade. What I love about Compass is that my daughter's learning and social issues are not used to hold her back. In addition to HFA she also deals with dyslexia. Being at Compass has shown her what she can do as the teachers work with every student to find their areas of strength and then work from that positive viewpoint to help each student in those many areas where they struggle to find ways to use their strength to compensate for their weaknesses. Compass is not for students who are below-average cognitive ability; have a primary diagnosis of emotional disturbance or a behavioral disorder; or have severe communication disorders or who are non-verbal. Compass is for students who are high school diploma bound and who are falling through the cracks and getting lost in their public or private school. It is for those students who can and will thrive given the right academic and social supports in small group setting with truly an individualize academic and social program.

"Bright students, with learning differences and diagnoses such as ADHD and/or HFA often are labeled as oppositional in traditional schools as they realize that what is happening in the classroom is not meeting their educational and social needs. Parents, in trying to help and advocate for our children, are set up in an adversarial relationship with the school system as we fight to obtain for our children federally mandated accommodations and establish individual education plans (IEP) that will allow our child to receive only, an ""appropriate"" education. However, at the same time I was fighting the system I was also telling my child to go to school and obey the same teachers and school administration that I was fighting for appropriate services. My chld saw and reacted to this dichotomy by making poor choices that set him on a downward spiral. At Compass with parents, teachers, and administration all being on the same page, working together in partnership to provide students with not only an appropriate education but in fact an education that maximizes the potential of each and every student, the cycle is broken and our children start to thrive academically and socially."

The phrase 'learning community' really comes to mind when I think of Compass. Never have I heard of a school where each individual student receives lessons specifically tailored to their particular needs. Students all over the world are unique, but rarely is a school able to take on the task of modifying, class by class, the material students work with. This is where Compass finds its niche, and we are proud to fill it. Compass prides itself on a consistently reflective attitude, and our familial atmosphere makes implementing new strategies easy. I'm happy to go to work every day, but more than that our students are happy to come to school every day, and I think that's something to be proud of. I'm proud to call Compass home, and I'm looking forward to growing and adapting with everyone who is a part of the Compass Family.
