Western High School Ratings & Reviews

Seriously? Does this school pay people to write positive reviews? This school is not as great and everyone makes it out to be. This year was the worst for my son. His teacher cares more about her looks than actually teaching! I mean really don't the teachers have to follow the dress code? Do NOT send your child here if they have special needs! Extremely disappointed in this school.

Before we moved into the Kokomo area in early 2012, we performed a lot of research on which high school to send our kids to. Western stood out as one of the top choices, so we enrolled them here. After a year and a half I must say I am truly dissapointed with our choice. Both of our boys have been consistently failing one course each. We have called and emailed the school counseler numerous times with our concerns. None of these messages have been returned. Also, never once have we been invited to a parent teacher conference. However, Western schools seem to be able to reach us just fine when they want us to sign up for next year so they can maximize their state funding grants. To top it off, we called the school to excuse our boys absence when we decided to extend our vacation for one day, but the school refused them the right to make up the work. I would caution anyone who plans on sending their children to this school. Although the faculty seems to be competent, when it comes to the administrative staff, Western seems to be scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

I am a regular at the ISSMA Marching Band competitions and this school should be ashamed of themselves with the way they treat other schools competing in the competitions. I have witnessed disrespect on behalf of the students of Western to other schools as well as the Band Director himself. If this is how young people are taught to treat others in this school, I would run . . . very far away. It's truly a shame.

Western is located just west of Kokomo. That allows it to bring in a lot of kids. It is a very good, strict school that provides many extra-corricular activities such as Athletics, Clubs, Academic Clubs, and Fine Arts. Fine Arts includeds the spectacular Marching Band.

I loved my time @ WHS & I think for a public school it does extremely well considering funding. If you live in Kokomo don't waste the money sending your kids to private school unless they need specialized attention or have discipline problems. Having recently graduated from college I can honestly say I was much better prepared in college than were my other friends that went to other area schools. Western has some very intelligent science/advanced math teachers as well as some stellar English teachers. A lot of the best teachers are nearing retirement age so be cognizant of that fact. WHS offers some varied classes not offered at other schools such as Japanese. If your kids like to work hard and are disciplined, there are ample opportunities available. But if your kids are slackers expect them to do about as well as they would do anywhere else.
