Horrible, I was severely bullied for being underweight due to my stomach disease and all of the councilors put it off like it was no big deal and I should just "love myself no matter what they say" instead of putting forth the effort to stop the bullying in the first place. Now, when it comes to actually learning things the teachers are pretty good until someone has a mental breakdown or has severe anxiety which will then label the kid as an "attention seeker" or simply "following trendy emo kids" mental illnesses are not taken very seriously at phs and people wonder why there have been school shooting scares on multiple occasions. Some students cry for help on the daily basis and receive nothing in return while the students who are doing wonderful receive all of the attention. Things need to change. Please pay more attention to the kids who actually need help.

It's a big school, so there are definitely all the problems that are usually present when you get a ton of teenagers together. However, the opportunities available at this school are fantastic. Athletics are great, but the opportunity for dual credit classes is phenomenal.

Portage High School is more than just a building. It is a place where not only education takes place, but relationships are developed. PHS is a place full of opportunities for student growth whether it is in academics, athletics, or the many other extra-curricular activities.

I would tell any parent whose child has an IEP to be very involved and persistent with the counselor and case conference team. There's a lot of mis guidance on certain classes, and looping program info. You have to research and dig to make sure your student is on track for college and beyond because they will not just offer or openly let you know. I've fought to get extra support services for my child and to make sure he is getting the same fair education as his fellow classmates.

Autistic teen started portage high with honor roll grades. Got in the high school, they main streamed him. Didnt provide any of the services in his IEP and basically wrote him off as a bad child w behavior problems. Refused to put him back in more structured setting. Said he was making the choice to misbehave. He started failing everything. Had a case conference at the end of the yr last yr and found out he was lying to teachers saying we dont feed him and he has no lunch money. He was free and reduced lunch. Not once did the school call us or inquire about that, just wrote it in his IEP and wouldnt fix it. It got to the point where he was coming home w headaches and stressed out. It was at the point where I would leave case conferences crying. Very disappointing when he was doing so well. Now he is in online school and that's not going well either being they cant provide the services he needs to excel. We recently moved and he will be starting in a new school in a different township and hopefully being it's a smaller school he can excel again. So as far as special education services and in general helping a parent this school sux.
