My child just started the 8th grade and I can't get her out of there quick enough. I only recently discovered charter schools so as soon as we can be assigned, I will take the first school out of IPS! This is her 3rd year attending. 7th grade was a nightmare. One specific teacher refused to teach her class if the students wouldn't be quiet. My child would actually plead with the students to calm down so she could hear the teacher. When she confronted the teacher about actually teaching, she was called a disturbance and written up for being confrontational and disrespectful. In fact, when she received her final grade for the year, she made the comment of not knowing how she even passed since she didn't learn anything. Last year, the food they served gave her stomach issues. The meat was often undercooked, they were served expired milk/juice or the food looked so horrible students were afraid to eat it and would simply throw it away. After seeing several pictures of what was served at lunch, I do not blame them! Her locker was stuck for 3 semesters and no one on staff would help her clear it so she was forced to carry her things all year in a book bag. My child claimed only 1 teacher actually taught from a text book so I guess it worked out in the end.She has sent me pictures of rodents and roaches. Every time I have visited for events, trash has littered the halls. This year, Short Ridge has merged with over 500 new students. There are 140 students in her gym class to be managed by 2 teachers. Several of her classes have 35-45 students. She didn't receive a locker, therefore, couldn't get her text books. They placed her in a class she had last year and it's been like pulling teeth to have it corrected. (A week later, we are still trying to get her schedule fixed and she still doesn't have books.)There's absolutely no communication within this school. Often times, we would receive last minute notice on events (3-4 days prior). As a working parent, it makes it difficult to take off or arrange for my child to participate. Anywhere has got to be better and I truly dread this school year if we have to stay! Hopefully, for the sake of our children's future, this new principal will get it together and take back the school.
