My child has had a fabulous year. He told me recently that it has flown by. (And he was lamenting it). He enjoyed extracurricular activities and has made new friends. My son also says group projects helped him get to know other kids. I am grateful that he has also had library where he can check out books and get information from a certified teacher librarian. He loved participating in music and foreign language class. It is a great school.

JCMS tracks students in teams, but is not very open with parents about this tracking. Students at the top and at the bottom are well served - the special education teacher is wonderful and the range of classes for top students is excellent. There are 3 foreign languages taught - Spanish, French, and Chinese. Students can take math through Algebra and Geometry at the school. If students are particularly advanced, they can take more advanced mathematics elsewhere. Half the graduating class has GPAs between 3.6 and 4.0 and another quarter have GPAs between 3.3 and 3.6. The school also has an impressive range of athletic, artistic, and extra-curricular activities for those so inclined. Students, especially non-athletic ones, at the lower end of the "normal" spectrum can get lost. My child claimed to be bullied and was very upset many times. When I asked the school, they claimed to have cameras in the halls and to have no evidence of bullying. My child is overly dramatic too - but the consistency and severity of the distress makes me believe that there must have been some bullying that was unnoticed by the teachers and cameras. My child had a mixture of quality in teachers. Some were really good and dealt with issues very professionally. A few could not bring themselves to think that the difficulties my child had were real disabilities rather than something controllable. That was frustrating since the tool to overcome the difficulty is so readily available - typing! The principal started a "Lunch with the Principal" event monthly which was poorly attended but a nice way to try to get parents involved. The school system, and the principal in particular, did an excellent job communicating with parents through email. The principal showed poor judgment at some point, suggesting, as I understand it, in an overly-general and too public a way that boys of color needed extra academic support. The principal apologized, and I think he sincerely meant well, but it was a little disconcerting at the time. JCMS is probably as good as a large middle school can be, but I am so grateful to be done with middle school.

Dear Mr. Pillar, I just returned home from the 7th and 8th grade choir concert, and wanted to take a minute to tell you that it was out of this world! I feel so lucky that my daughter is involved in a music program that is so enthusiastically promoted and put together so well. It truly went above and beyond the ordinary concert with the decorations and the music. Mr. Upchurch is just as fun to watch as the choir! That is a man who is truly doing what he loves, and what he is meant to be doing. We are so lucky to have him. While I've got you, I also would like to express my most sincere gratitude for you and your entire staff. As parents, it feels like middle school passes in the blink of an eye and I wonder if you ever get the praise you deserve. Your job is no easy task, and not only have I never had a single complaint or disappointment with JCMS, but I am so impressed with every aspect of the school. The sports programs (swimming, cross-country, and track) have been nothing but positive, inclusive and instructive. The teachers have been enthusiastic, helpful and communicative. The rules/discipline are fair, consistent and communicated to the kids in a firm but kind manner. The office staff has been nothing but friendly and helpful. After having both of my children go through, I can say that I absolutely love Jackson Creek. So thank you, thank you, thank you for leading such a fine program and group of people! Every school should hold you as an example of what to strive for!
