0 - I would not recommend this school to anyone! Especially if your child is not from the area! Some of the kids in this school are horrible and not enough is done for discipline or punishment when they do wrong! It's as if the staff feels as long as its not happening to their child why should they care! The bad kids run this school and will constantly bully the other kids to the point where they no longer want to go to school! I fear for my child's safety because he has been constantly bullied and beat up, all because he is new to the school/area! I wouldn't recommend anybody send their child to this school and I am getting my child out ASAP!

Get out of Urbana before your kids go to this school. The faculty and staff have NO control over students. I also suspect they are careful about how they place students in classrooms; good students get put together and the rest are left to their ruin.

My daughter left an Urbana elementary school to enter UMS as a confident, happy, creative kid. A year later, she was depressed, skittish, and talking about self-harm because of the harassment she endured on a daily basis from her so-called peers. Whether it was the cliquish young girls who blocked access to her locker or the thuggish young men who whispered sexual insults at her during passing periods, it was a daily gauntlet that she had to run. My wife and I made the pricey decision to put her into private school for 8th grade, which wasn't easy - on our pocketbooks or our consciences, since we are supporters of public education - but she's slowly recovered her creativity and love of learning. She dreads entering Urbana High School, though. To the parents who think UMS is great, I am glad you've had positive experiences. To those of you who put the blame for bullying on the parents of those being bullied, though, I say look in the mirror. I suspect your kids are having a great time at UMS because they - like you - *are* the bullies.

I love UMS. It is unfortunate that some people who have had a less than positive experience at the school feel the need to voice their frustrations publicly. I suspect their children are part of the problem. My son and his friends have had a great experience for 2.5 years now. Nearly all of the teachers are great, and he has had lots of opportunities for other experiences. My son has never reported bullying, drugs, or other problems. I'm sure they happen at UMS as they do at any other school, but blaming the school for these issues is a horrible thing to do. It starts with the parents!

Bullying is definately problem, all our kids experienced bullying in one form or another. School officials pay no attention. Academic level is ver low. Drug control is minimal ans school officials prefer not to get involved. Overall it is shame to have such low standard middle school in great university tow.
