South Campus Ratings & Reviews

April 23, 2017 Submitted by a parent
I am writing a detailed review because I and other families were very much misled as to what South Campus offers and how it is run. The school provides containment for students who cannot be in regular classrooms, and it gives them easy credits toward graduation. But I would avoid South Campus if you are at all interested in having your child educated, and particularly if your child wants to be educated. The individual therapy can be good, but the groups are not taken seriously and the academics are dismal except for math. There is no homework. There are no extracurriculars. There is no socializing allowed and no opportunity to form healthy relationships. Most of the so-called classes listed in the school directory are not actual classes. If a class is termed an “independent study” (which they won’t necessarily tell you in advance) the student will be put in a corner with a stack of worksheets while another class is going on and may or may not be monitored. This is true even with students with ADHD and other learning issues. Any mistakes or oversights on the school’s part will be blamed on the student, even when all evidence is to the contrary. A child who is not a behavior problem will be ignored. There is no effort to work with learning disorders or to maximize potential, rather, your child will be given high school credit for doing what is assuredly not high school work. While the school states that its classes meet the state standards, even a cursory review of those standards vis a vis what is taught in the classrooms makes that claim very dubious. Two-way communication with parents with regard to schoolwork is not welcomed to the extent that there are no parent-teacher conferences and there is no response when parents attempt to raise serious issues or in any way be partners in education. The successes the school touts were successful because the bulk of their education was gotten elsewhere. The school can get away with this because of the population it serves and the dearth of alternatives. If you are considering this school for your child, verify anything you are told with your own eyes. Ask which classes are taught as classroom classes. Ask to see the curriculum. Ask to see a class, particularly an English class. Ask to speak to other parents. Listen carefully to the answers, what is not said as much as what is said.
