Washington Jr High School Ratings & Reviews

My child is in 6th grade .I have been very happy with the school and it’s academics. Teachers are always available for their students. Mrs . Turner often let’s my daughter have lunch with her so my daughter can get her homework done. I like all the extra activities Washington has to offer. The school definitely does handle bullying situations . There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer .I think Mr. Vogel and all his staff are so friendly and very helpful and they know their students.I think Washington is a wonderful JRHS. Some of the responses say Washington doesn’t handle bullying and that the faculty is unfriendly , I disagree many times my child has been allowed to leave class to call me because she forgot her homework, if I need to give her a message the front office gives it to her. Also my child missed lunch because of an appointment the front office staff took my daughter to the cafeteria while 8th Graders were eating and made sure my daughter ate lunch they even let her sit in the office to eat. That just goes to show that they do care about their students.

Parents who are looking to send their children to Washington may want to be aware of a few things. Maybe my situation is unique, but as a parent who's child went to Washington all three years, I wish someone would have told me what to expect. First off, this is Naperville. Parents as a whole are very conscientious of how their children are doing academically. They are supportive and driven; Naperville teachers definitely reap the benefits of that. Now on to the not-so desirable attributes of this school:1. School supplies. We bought our child everything on the list, which cost quite a bit, only to have the teacher toss all his materials in a bin for the class to sort through. Big lesson in Socialism 101.2. Computer access. Security at the computer stations is terrible. Kids can easily access websites you would not want them looking at, and they most certainly take advantage of this. Hopefully they've improved in this area.3. Indoctrination. If you are a conservative, God fearing, supporter of the constitution, expect your child to experience an undermining of all three of these attributes. Any expressions of opposing views are mocked. My son personally experienced this, and any emails from me were responded to with a dismissive attitude. 4. Bullying. If your child is new, shy, socially awkward- they may become a target. If they defend themselves, they will be hauled into the counselor's office for a stern reprimand. Sadly, it's a guilty until proven innocent environment.5. School conferences. In certain cases, the teachers will ask you to come to a group conference, where they all sit on one side of the table and you sit opposite facing them. Maybe they don't intend to give the impression of ganging up on you, but that is exactly what it feels like. After listening to the onslaught of every issue your child has, discussions of what can be done to help are brought up. The "solutions" will not be implemented. Requests for individual conferences to address this with the teachers will be ignored. At $80,000+ pay a year, I was appalled at their lack of caring.Positives? My son made some really good friends while at Washington that made it bearable. But my heart still aches over what he went through while attending there. I hope my review is helpful, and most of all that Washington finds better solutions to the issues I discussed above.

This is is such a tremendous school. Top notch across the board. They staff cares, pushes students, and tries to find their unique talents.

Three children went through this school, all with different personalities. One competitive. One shy. One outspoken. Our family challenged all areas of the school. They all seemed to find their niche. With parental support and encouragement, they found areas to interact with other students, whether it was sports, student gov't, drama, music, clubs, there were numerous opportunities. The education provided challenged and prepared them. There was always homework, but the mentality and expectation from educators, parents and fellow students alike was that education was paramount. The school promoted community involvement and volunteerism, thus formulating the spirit of giving back at a young age. They helped to shape well rounded people and prepare them for HS. Lastly my kids LOVED Washington! They have great memories of teachers and Institute days spent enjoying our downtown with their lifelong friends. Lastly, there will always be someone who has a bad experience. It's what you learn from it and how it's used to build character that will matter later in life. I felt the staff was attentive and responsive. Parents need to take some responsibility too. Past Parent
