We have been at JMS now for 5 years. My daughter transferred in first grade from another area Montessori school (we had just moved into the area). We have been very happy with the level of education here. . The faculty and staff truly employ Maria Montessori's philosophy, strongly adhering to the dignity of the child, choice within appropriate limits, community living and learning. Because of this amazing learning community my daughter is well spoken, community minded, confident, independent and self motivated and most importantly, the love of learning has not been "educated" out of her.

1. We have been attending JMS for a few years in various levels. Our youngest child, who was part of the primary room, was forgotten after recess. Yes, forgotten by the assistant directress. My child came home that day and mentioned how they had been outside by themselves “with a couple friends.” I brushed it off thinking he was referring to just a fun game he was playing with his friends; because kids. Didn’t find out from the school! Other parents brought up issues their children were coming home and discussing!Parents said 3 more children, besides mine, were forgotten outside. A different classroom assistant found them and escorted them to their class. The entire room of parents got together and brought this issue (as well as others) to the head of the board, Bobbi P. She said we had to follow protocol of the parent handbook. We then had a meeting with Heidi, the assistant directress, and the classroom parents. Heidi explained that it wasn’t 4 kids, it was “just 2.” That makes it better? Is that even the truth? She also stated a new policy of doing a head count would take place before and after every recess session. In a classroom of 3-6 year olds, how is that not already taking place? Why is there not a zero tolerance for neglect policy? Stupidly, we tried to give the school the benefit of the doubt since we have been going for years and this particular Head of School is new. Since then, communication has been cut off between parents, Directresses, and only up coming events are communicated from the school. 2. On a severely cold day (approx. 8 degrees) the heat broke in a portion of the building. Kids in the Lower Elementary room (6-9 yr) were forced to wear coats, scarves and gloves to endure their classroom! Kids complained they were freezing even with their coats! Where was the common sense in this to have the children go to the HEATED parts of the school? Turned out, the heat cut out around 8 that morning! Heidi sent an email at 7pm, that night, stating the issue and the heat was fixed around 12:30pm! Where was notification via text, email, and/or phone to let parents know what their children are experiencing and how it’s being handled? Not one word at drop off, throughout the day, or at pick up! 3. MAP scores are lower this year than previous. Kids are being affected by the main common denominator that has changed this year.

We have been a JMS family for over 12 years and, as the resident skeptic when we first arrived there, I cannot recommend JMS and Montessori education enough. I have a straight-A sophomore in an acclaimed public high school AP and honors program as evidence of the phenomenal foundation that JMS provides. I have 2 thoughtful, curious and self-confident grade-schoolers to confirm that the school continues to grow and improve with each passing year. JMS provides the education that our children OUGHT to get.
