Univ Of Chicago Lab School Ratings & Reviews

December 14, 2016 Submitted by a parent
I have compared U of C Lab school curriculum and students from grades 3-5 with the same at a Chicago north suburban public &for the price about $2500/ month/student Lab gets a bad rating. Lab does not challenge gifted math students as does the north public schools bc they did not provide different math levels at this crucial stage. I also saw the writing levels of 4th graders, was only impressed with 2 of ~ 20 students. Most students showed lack of structure, cohesiveness, spelling skills. Lab relies on the smarts of the best students and Lab will gladly take parents $ from nursery to gr8. No real assessments so no clue. By high school Lab weeds out the kids that will make them look bad when ACT test scores are used to compare them with public school kids. Lab asks the kids who will not make them look good to leave at ~high school. So In the end it's not Lab that makes the kids but the kids that make Lab. People who work at the university get 1/2 off and there are no other good schools public or private in the area. UofC Lab school is in the south side of Chicago (not good). It's really not part of the city where you could walk to rest of city. It is so far south past McCormick place that it feels like a south suburb. The children are told they are great by the school so they have a confidence but it's not grounded in reality. I am not impressed. For that same price per month for one child you can buy a home in the north suburbs and have free education that is better and have your child grounded in reality. If Lab was great then they would have their students take the same tests as the public schools so parents could very easily compare, but they do not, and that says a lot. They also have horrible security. They do not take responsibility for signing the kids out of school but let the kids out with no supervision. Because they are a private school they are not subject to state laws that govern public schools that protect the children. If your child is bright, I would not pay for them to make Lab look good. I have seen graduates of Lab who are not impressive but they sure think they are and this has only hurt them in life. They have a hard time coping with any criticism. I think this is a result of Labbies certainly talking themselves up to each other and are afraid to step out of the Lab zone for comparison. Not impressed.

Lab is phenomenal. Our 2 kids have only attended Lab, and will be finishing 8th grade shortly. Over all our years at Lab, the teachers have been outstanding, with possibly 2 exceptions. The diversity is unlike any other school in Chicago. It is a mix that helps introduce your kids to the world far beyond the norm. The only drawback is lack of athletics, but their "no cut" policy will allow them to participate instead of being cast off. If you want a regular school with pep rallies, football games, etc., this school is not for you. But if you want a school where there is true warmth from the teachers and administration toward your kids, this is the perfect place.

I am a student at the Lab School and I have been going there since the first year of preschool. I am going into eighth grade this year, and I am very excited! I went through a really tough time, and the only place that I felt welcomed was Lab School. Everyone at Lab helped me through it and didn't judge me for a second. I have had so many amazing teachers who I will never forget. Lab has made me into an amazing person and I am so lucky to attend that school. A lot of people say that Lab is full of snotty rich kids, but that is just an awful stereotype. I love Lab and I have had so many amazing experiences there. LABBIE FOR LIFE!!!!! :)

Hello everyone! I was a student at lab from Kindergarten all of the way through the end of high school (class of '03). My brother and one of my cousins also went to Lab all around the same time. Lab, in my opinion, is one of the best schools in the city for academics because it teaches students how to think critically, find critical information from various viewpoints, analyze information and build unique arguments. I will say, however, that During my Freshman year of college (at Pepperdine University), I noticed that I was much more prepared than many of my peers. I am so grateful for the education that I received and for all of the money that my parents had to pay for 13 years! The education is excellent, but the social dynamics of the school are a little "different." Lab doesn't have a traditional football game, pep rally and homecoming party kind of an atmosphere. If that's not your thing, then Lab is the school for you, but otherwise you might want to check out St. Ignatius (where another cousin of mine went). Another large plus for Lab is its diversity. I don't think the other private schools in the city (Parker and Latin) have anywhere near as diverse a community as Lab.

I love Lab. Labbies are taught to think critically rather than memorize the material...I had trouble with that first since I'd been going to public schools for most of my life, where I'd just have to study my notes and get straight A's. Here, tests are all about critical thinking and brainwork and it is extremely difficult to get A's...but I'm so glad I came here because this school made me look at everything with a whole new perspective...what Lab can do for your child is beyond amazing. I'm not gonna lie, the stress is just awful sometimes, but it's all worth it in the end. Send your child here, and you will see the magic happen...
