Mt Carmel High School Ratings & Reviews

After skimming through most of the comments, I noticed that parents were giving this school a review based on their child who is a freshman. I recently graduated and let me tell you the freshman are treated like babies, the teachers will hold their hand through the year. Also it is true that football players get special treatment. I took excel classes and honestly, the teachers only care about their salary. The head Dean, only cares about money too. A teacher in my math class told me to go to the Dean's office because I was talking to the person behind me when I was facing forward. In the Dean's office, I tried to explain to her that I was not talking but she kept talking over me (They try to teach you to respect everyone but you don't receive any back which is strange). I told the same story to the dean but he didn't care so he wrote me a $15 referral. In short, the staff will assume and fine without looking at the facts. The clothes that the sell are made of a cheap cotton but they charge $35 for a polo, $80 for a crewneck, and $120 for a jacket (which you cannot wear during school hours). The old building lacks a heating system so sitting in a desk in old building is equivalent to sitting outside in Chicago weather. 9 times out of 10 your child will get sick and you may want to keep him at home. But wait, you have to give a valid reason why your son is absent which is absurd (I've done some research and they do the same thing at a psychiatric hospital. You have to notify them where you child was when he was absent, if not their will be consequences). Chicago school system is failing so many children. Public schools don't have reliable teachers and are poor, private schools have somewhat reliable teachers and decent food but you have to pay an arm and a leg.Tuition for me was $10,600 per year but now that there are less student tuition rose. Overall you might be paying close to $50,000 for high school which is more than one year at the University of Miami (which is in the top 10 colleges for education). You're better off homeschooling your child.

Mt Carmel is designed for boys who love to play sports. There are 3 sports seasons and 3 academic trimesters. Sports are extremely competitive so don't be surprised if your son doesn't make the basketball, football or baseball team. The curricular options are solid with a good mix of AP classes. However the teaching quality is low. There are some outstanding teachers but the sad truth is that most teachers are hired for their ability to coach a sport first and teach second. If you have a son that thrives on playing sport and needs to play competitive sports to wake up and go to school everyday then Mt. Carmel is the perfect school. If you have a son who has varied interests and may want to get involved in more academic pursuits such as robotics, math club etc. look elsewhere.

Mount Carmel truly is an AMAZING! We live in Pullman area in Chicago and my son travels an hour just to attend Mount Carmel each day. When we started looking for schools for our four kids, we realized that there weren't that many good CPS schools in our area. Knowing that our kids had to get a good education, in order to compete in this world. We turned to Catholic schools. Sure, it was a major financial investment to send four kids to catholic schools but we could not sacrifice our kids education nor livelihood. We chose St. Columbanus School on the south side because it provided a solid academic program. Our oldest son graduated from St. C in the 95% percentile. He was accepted to Jones & Mount Carmel. We chose Mt. Carmel so that he could continue a faith based, academically sound school. He is enrolled in all honor classes at Mt. Carmel & have met kids from all over Illinois. He participate in sports and community service. I know that Mt.Carmel is helping to shape him into a responsible, well educated young man. I have no regrets when we chose Mt. Carmel. We have another son and he will attend Mount Carmel also. Catholic schools are worth every penny.

I am currently a junior at the school and I enjoy it. I wouldn't consider myself an athlete. I am in the honors/AP curriculum and it is challenging. The only problem I have with this school is they should try to expand their science department, especially with the new seven period day. Also, they should look into starting more clubs.

Mount Carmel HS offers a superior scholastic experience, dedicated to the development of young men in a safe, challenging and requiring environment. My Grandfather liked the biblical phrase, "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another". Mount Carmel HS provides the 'iron' necessary to sharpen the 'iron' that is the 'young men of Mount Carmel HS', and these are the 'young men' who wish to one day graduate as 'Men of Carmel'. The discipline and dedication required to attend Mount Carmel High School is not for everyone, but for those who stay the course and graduate, I believe most will be made better by the experience.
