Excelent, great learning environment, small classes and great international community.

I highly recommend this school to international-minded, compassionate, smart, and genuine people. Our experience over the last two years has been great. The staff, director, and board of trustees, teachers and parents are so committed to this very special school. And it is just that - a very special school. Beyond a top notch education, a bilingual education, personal attention, and small classes, German International School Chicago provides an amazing community for the children and the parents. The families are smart, hard-working, loving, nurturing, caring, international-minded, compassionate, interesting and genuine. It's actually amazing how much in common there is among the families, despite them coming from all over the world and speaking different languages. I know my children are safe and very cared for if ever under the supervision of other families. (And I am not a particularly trusting person, especially when it comes to my children.)With respect to the international community and bilingual education - it is so neat! My Chicago born and raised 5-year old child (raised in an English-speaking household) is fluent in German now and is translating for new students just learning German. Also, my child's best friend is a German native speaker. As a result of their close friendship, they each learned the other's language better and more quickly than they may have otherwise. This is really a great school, where you learn both English and German, as well as other languages. For people who do not have a particular connection to German, keep in mind that German is spoken in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, and that Germany has the largest economy in Europe. Further, it just happens to be the primary language used in the school. So many families also speak Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and other languages. Many of the children are actually trilingual, and that is before they start to formally study French in school (3rd grade, I believe).I know this is definitely the school for my family and I hope that my children will graduate high school from German International School Chicago with an IB diploma.

My advice is don't send your kids there. For me it is a bunch of respectless managers which don't value you or your kid. I belive that some managers and board members did found the school to promote and celebrate themselves instead of giving your child an excellent education. It seemd that they were lieing right into my face. In my opinion they charge a lot for very poor quality. They also try to hide incidents like a kid did hurt an other kid during school several times. The family did left the school because they were not able to stop this behavior. I wouldn't recommend this school to anybody who loves and or care about his kid.

My son is at the school, and he loves it. He was very hesitant initially having never been in daycare or another caregiver prior to school, but Frau Trockenbrodt and Frau Polanski were great to help him integrate into the class quickly. He did not speak German prior to enrolling, but flips back and forth now with ease. We love the school.

My daughter has been at GISC for a year and half, and we are very happy with the school. We do not speak German in the home, but are of German descent. She speaks German fluently, and was proficient within 3 months at the school. Even though my husband and I don't speak it, we've been included in the school community and don't feel we are treated any differently. We love the language aspect of the school, but GISC is a great school even without that component. There are small classes, great teachers, and a vibrant community. Our daughter is not only learning, but is interested in learning. I was worried about how strict the teachers would be on a little pre-schooler with no German skills, but the teachers were kind and caring. This is definitely a German and international school though - there is more attention to detail, children are taught the metric system, and learn and celebrate German culture and holidays (e.g. Laternenfest, St. Niklas, Fasching). The school building is adequate, but doesn't knock your socks off. The school is growing and will soon outgrow the current space. They are beginning to look for a new building or options for the current space. If I could change one thing about the school it would be to increase the outdoor space, but on the whole it's an easy compromise when I consider all the other positives about the school.
