Chicago High School For Agricult Sciences Ratings & Reviews

I am currently a freshman at CHSAS and I would like to say the information reported in the reviews is exceptionally false. For starters, students do not smoke on school premises. I know ths for a fact considering there has been a time whereas a student attempted to have a cigarette outside of the school, and was later suspended because of this. Another issue I would like to address is the Spirit Week problem. There were no eggs or vegetable oil and whoever is claiming that there was is untruthful. Prior to Spirit Week, rumors circulated about what were to happen. Friday of Spirit Week, the only thing that was done was glitter and silly string being thrown at all students, not just freshmen. Of course there was the traditional "Go Home, Freshmen" chant, but that happens in every school (I attended Marist's Spirit Week last year for shadow day). As far as the "Teachers and staff do't care about students" claim, that is also false. If your grades have declined or are declining, you will be advised to speak with he academic counselor. Tutoring is offered afterschool and teachers are willing to stay afterschool to help if need be. So far, however, there has been one physical altercation which was soon handled by security and the principal. If the student population is too large, compare it to Marist whereas there are over 1,000 students. The principal also teaches a class to upperclassmen in need of help. Chsas even offers a mentally disadvantaged department for students and other students are very friendly and welcoming to them. At lunch, you'll see students chatting and laughing with them as well. In conclusion, the choice for your child to attend Chsas is up to you, however, don't base it off of false information from those who have never even attended/ been to the school.

Learning about commas and quotation marks in high school? School out of control. All this business about good opportunities...garbage. My other child has many more opportunities at private school...which is exactly where my child is going this year. They will get into U of I with a low ACT though....Just go in through school of agriculture...Anyone can do it....not just ag kids...BIG SECRET.My niece did! Teachers are unbelievably uncaring and do not care. Kids out of control...no one cares. Free trips....well that is why CPS is broke...maybe they should use some of that money and invest it in education. Drive by the school at dismissal and you will see the crowds. Fist fights in halls all the time. No one stops them. Security guard stands and watches it. This school is a mockery of the education system. Shame on them. The kids are smoking hookah walking down the hall changing classes. No needs to do homework...or study for tests....the teachers don't care one bit. The difference in the private school this year is shocking. There is actual teaching and so many things to be a part of. You can actually join sports and the coaches show up to practice. There is Christianity. What a sad reflection of the times this school is. The Ag is creating an environment that shows kids that you just can skate by and not be accountable...no need to do what is required. You can do the bare minimum and be top of the class. Truly...pay the tuition for a private school or move to the suburbs if you want a quality education and a dignified school that your child can be at a place where they are shown respect and expected to perform and reach their highest expectation. I truly worry for the kids stuck here. Such a pity. Parents...do your research....this school is a mockery. I have been in the education field for 20+ years...I know how it is supposed to be...this is not it.

Inner city school brought to a nice neighborhood. Lot of fights, zero discipline and an apathetic principal who can't be truthful. No books for many classes, teachers out for weeks at a time and mist can't control the kids they are teaching. Pay the money and send kids to private schools.

i can't understand why this school does not provide books especially in critical areas, like math. can some explain to me why these kids are working from work sheets instead of a book. becuase of this, i can not rate this school high. the school is great in every other way. Fighting is up, wish the school can expel the problem kids (a handful, but the handful disrupt the whole). last a week a senior jumped on a freshman (something that started on the bus, according to my daughter). the senior was wrong and should be made an example of, there is no reason, none for jumping on a freshman, zilch.

Graduated in 2009 and CHSAS gave me scholarships and pushed me to apply and then later receive scholarships for college. Fortunately, I continued my higher education with agriculture at Illinois State University. I would say CHSAS is for the MOTIVATED "average student" and for the ABOVE average student. Every year CHSAS has more and more seniors getting accepted to Ivy League schools with scholarships....overall the school is safe, challenging , and EXTREMELY hands on.
