British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park Ratings & Reviews

We've had two children go through the British School LP campus for a number of years. If your child falls within the normal range of most children they will do fine here. If you suspect your child has any sort of learning challenges I can't recommend enough that you stay far far away. They do ok with LD support and have a lovely team of people in place to help with this. Unfortunately they are all pretty young and not terribly good at identifying key issues early enough and effectively communicating this to the parents. Then, at least for us, we got the feeling is some kind of pressure to keep telling the parents not to worry, things will be fine, so they can keep the child enrolled in the school. No way to prove it obviously that was just the sense we got. Then the real drawback is they do literally no standardized testing so there is no real way to gauge your child's progress. This may be part of the British philosophy, but we found it close to impossible to really assess how they are doing. A lot of friends transferred out to LAB, Parker, Latin etc for this reason.PROS: Lovely teachers, very bright if a bit young, top-notch facilities, great location, very very strong music and arts programs, not too difficult to get in, good amount of after school programs.CONS: no standardized testing, no strong skills on identifying children with learning support needs, homework seemed inappropriate for age group at times, grading system constantly changing, administration changes frequent, seems like a lot more students transfer out that in.overall it's a good environment but couldn't get past the constantly changing homework, grading policies and administration staff.

British International School - Lincoln Park is an absolute gem. My children have learned so, so much; they excel in classical subjects, and are deeply involved in the study and technique of all manner of arts (dance, fine art, music). It continually exceeds my expectations. The principal is a force. She models all the values of the school, and the values, frankly, any school should have (integrity, ambition, cultural awareness, love of learning, discipline). She is accessible and approachable. All the children know her and regard her highly. She is, unfortunately, leaving, but has been very instrumental in the selection of the new principal that I feel confident her gifts and spirit will carry on.The teachers are very friendly with each other which is very pleasant for the children to see. It appears to be a very gratifying working environment for them and they all seem happy in their work. Being inside the school is a lively, energetic, happy experience! The teachers are, furthermore, committed to the end to give each child what s/he needs. They are devoted to children and teaching children, first and foremost, and appear to be keen to each child's needs which is imperative to foster a love of learning. Our interactions with the teachers have been superb. The school has incredible networks and can be seen with their collaboration with Juilliard and MIT. The projects associated with both are top-notch. The STEAM program, specifically, is currently exploding with activity and eagerness. Mr. Collins lives and breathes Science, and it shows. My kids adore him; he's fun and funny, energetic, smart, involved, current. It's been great!I cannot imagine a parent questioning the value of a principal, teacher or school, but I've come to understand it's not uncommon. I have fewer than zero complaints about my confidence that my kids will be happy, globally-aware, resourceful, productive members of society and fondly remember their time at British International School - LP.
