I’ve been very impressed by Stratton, and it’s staff. I have nothing negative to say about it.

My daughter was assigned to this school when we moved to Champaign after the school year had already begun. When we moved here from abroad my daughter spoke hardly any English. I was a bit worried after having read the reviews here and the school report card. Yet, her experience could not have been more positive. Her homeroom teacher was absolutely fantastic and made her feel welcome. The other teachers and administrators also contributed to the positive atmosphere at school. My daughter flourished and I enjoyed watching her self-confidence grow as her language skills developed (which they did - really fast!). The other children in her class also made her feel welcome and she quickly developed a strong friendship.

My kid transferred to Stratton's third grade gifted. Since her previous school was one of the best schools in Champaign, I was not confident about this transfer. But it turns out that it is the best decision we've ever made in her academic life. The third grade gifted teacher is the best. Before my kid met him, she was afraid to ask questions and not enjoying her school life. But now her teacher encourages her to ask questions, to solve a problem with various perspectives, to learn self-control and self-confidency with his aquarium science project as well as with the school curriculum. And best of all through his aquarium project she is learning what science really means and how to take care of little creatures. She is not afraid to ask questions any more. She told me that she was so thankful to be a Stratton student.

This school is, well, I'll be honest, CRAZY. There is educational malpractice occurring everyday and it is absolutely atrocious. I wish the principal was a leader but there has been more leadership witnessed at McDonald's. If you are wise, you will find another school and avoid this one posthaste. Others share my view, and the community at large should be aware that children suffer in this environment.

Unless their is overwhelming parental involvement, after school activities are unsupported. The main emphasis seems to be on lifting up the lowest performing students, so that the AYP numbers look better. If your student is performing above average, or easily meets standards, they will be neglected by administration; understandably so, when you consider they do nothing for the score. They are already meeting expectations, so why bother spending any resources making sure they grow at a rate they should. Pitiful priorities, if you care about your child please select another school.
