Giant City Elementary School Ratings & Reviews
Giant City School is one of the worst schools you could send your child to. It is extremely lacking in diversity, and since it's such a small school, whenever one student is bullied, it turns the entire school against them. Not only is homophobia and racism extremely strong within this school, but nothing is done about it. As a former student, I can say without a second thought in my mind that every day I stepped into that school, with such an air of prejudice and vile, bitter hatred, I honestly wanted to end my own life. Luckily, after councilling and finally getting away from this school, I am back on my feet, yet the students from this school are still bothering and harassing me from stuff that had occurred over two years ago. Now, this is just with the students. The teachers overall do not take the initiative to aid in teaching the students the content that needs to be taught, and if someone is struggling within one class due to the fact that their mind is not accustomed to the teacher's way of teaching, the teachers don't so much as bother to help the student (Not to say that they did much to teach the kids in the first place). If you want your child shoved aside with a book, forced to teach themselves with no guidance whatsoever, and be constantly harassed by students with such a small-minded point of view of the world, then this is the perfect school for you.
We have 3 children at GCS and could not be happier. The teachers are all very caring and responsive and have done everything possible to help our kids succeed.
I would NOT recommend this school. Since the new administrator has taken over three years ago, Giant City has suffered declining enrollments, and the school is struggling. ISBE records report for the school year 2011-2012 (before the new superintendent was hired), Giant City had an enrollment of 259. In the ensuing three years under this administrator, enrollment has dropped to 226 (a 13% decline). Conversely, for the past three years, enrollments at all the other remaining school districts feeding into the Carbondale High School District have experienced enrollment increases. Unity Point has increased from 694-717 (+3.3%); DeSoto has increased from 216-226 (+4.6%); Carbondale has increased from 1331-1361 (+2.3%). Recently, Giant City indicated that it will again be seeking support from taxpayers in the form of a tax increase for districts residents. In their last bid for a tax increase in 2013, poor communication with the public and a lack of leadership from the current administration hindered the school’s efforts, and the referendum overwhelmingly failed. Wake up Giant City! This school needs an overhaul, and it is time for an administrative change.
Awesome teachers and staff that go the extra mile to help students reach their full potential.
Southern Illinois schools face many problems regarding funding, and they need to do what they can with the ever decreasing share of what they are getting. Having said that, Giant City school not only makes the best out of it, but they do it in a caring, student-centered fashion. Our kids attend kindergarten and first grade and they could not be happier. GCS is more like a family, class sizes are small, everyone knows each other and the teachers are caring and keep in constant communication with us. For a school this size, GCS offers a diverse environment. The location could not be better, and the facilities are top notch. Any reviews mentioning politics should be beside the point, as this is true in all public schools in the area. People don't want to contribute to their public school district because they don't want to pay taxes, and yet they want their property value to remain high. I am glad we are located in the GCS district, we are indeed very fortunate!
