Willowwind School Ratings & Reviews

Willowwind has far surpassed our expectations for our child's education experience. We absolutely love the kindness and compassion play such a big part in our child's school day. The community is their classroom with frequent field trips. The teachers and administration make each family feel like a part of something special. Our child looks forward to everyday at Willowwind and so do we.

Willowwind is an amazing school. I have had two children attend, one with special needs. The faculty, administration, and office staff are always helpful and truly care about what they do. Willowwind was even named an Iowa top workplace this year. We love this school!

I think the one star review is harsh but contains much truth in it, and it's not merely a matter of one person/family's subjective opinion. When we decided to quit Willowwind after kindegarten, it was for many of the same reasons, reasons which were, incidentally, echoed by other parents I had spoken with before making that decision. There's much to like about Willowwind: academically rigorous, engaged teachers, strong sense of community. There's much to frown at as well: not terribly diverse (the community the school is located in is both racially and socio-economically diverse), lack of a variety of basic services public schools provide (e.g. counselors, which would have benefited our child greatly, an actual librarian, nurse/medical personnel, services for speech pathology, learning disability, special needs, etc.), and, frankly, a head of school who deals with neural atypical children and their particular concerns largely by encouraging their parents in not so subtle ways to go somewhere else. We too found meetings with the head to be ineffectual, and, in our case, he made snap judgments about our child's situation based on inaccurate information. And a personalized educational assessment, which is what the PEP is, is not the same as individualized attention. Our child's emotional well-being suffered a great deal because the head and, to a lesser extent, her teacher, regarded her as a problem to be disciplined or fixed rather than take the simple advice I had given them from years of my own experience to approach her in a fundamentally different way. Her teacher, to her credit, did finally come around, but by then we had already made the decision to go. Many children thrive at Willowwind, but there has also arisen a culture there that refuses to acknowledge why many also do not. That said, the preschool is great, but it's very different from K-6 there.

Willowwind is an excellent school. My daughter has been attending since 2009. The children are given ample opportunity to be creative and express themselves. They develop a phenomenal perspective on many issues that affect our society. Through interactive projects and field trips, they have an engaging curriculum. The children do academically very well in math, reading, and science. Although the sample size is small to make statistical inferences. children score well beyond their peers in the ITBS exam. I think the one-star October 21, 2014 review is very unfair!
