Iowa City High School Ratings & Reviews

I have 2 daughters going to Iowa City High and agree that it is a fabulous school. West High families have always felt their school is superior but I have to disagree. City High is a more diverse school, especially when it comes to socioeconomic but they certainly hold their own when it comes to performance. I personally love the diversity at City High as do my daughters and feel the education at City is fantastic. I feel a more diverse student body helps everyone! I also want to comment on the principal, John Bacon, who is amazing! He takes such an interest in all the kids and I believe he knows every student's name - which I believe is more than 1500 students at this time. He is present at every sporting event that I have been to and I am sure he attends many more than I do. He has a true respect for the students and the students know it. When I was in high school I barely knew who the principal was (and I went to a smaller school). The academics, the music programs, the sports opportunities, the teachers - all fantastic!

I graduated in 2012, and could not have been happier with the education I received. I was allowed to be a free thinker, to take charge of my own education, and to interact with my teachers on a level that was more comfortable than "I am teacher. LEARN." The new principal is incredibly friendly, personable, and tries to have an active interaction with every single student in the school. The teachers are brilliant, fun, and well educated in their fields.

Unfortunately this is not as good a school as West High, this has resulted in the school system forcing children that had been traditionally zoned for West High to go to City High even though their friends at Northwest are going to West.

City High is a great environment for students to learn, excell and become outstanding young adults. The administration and teachers are phenomonal and challenge the kids to be the best they can be.
