The worst school I have ever seen. Over crowded, does not help children with special needs or children who needs tutoring. It is very difficult to get a teacher to email you back they don't really care.

My son is a sophomore here. Although we moved to another school district, we chose to keep him here because of the Academy program. We like that he is able to experience classes in the subject area which he believes he wants to pursue in college. There are only 4 schools in Gwinnett County that offer that program, and South Gwinnett is one of only a few that offer STEM or Engineering classes. There is some riff raff at the school, but that's true about every school. My son is AP/Honors and most of his friends are, too, so they don't interact with the kids who don't want to do their work or want to cause trouble. As long as he continues to be successful and safe at South Gwinnett, we will gladly keep him there.

This school environment is dangerous. There are many students who should be suspended for violence in the classroom, but the staff is either too afraid to handle them or don't think anything about the behavior. The assistant teachers are typically rude or behave like kids themselves. Discipline is what this school needs. They also need a bigger front drive enough for some visitor parking.

I am a senior here. The whole academy thing is not working out well. The only significant difference I see is with the counselors. No one knows where to locate the counselors now that the counselors are no longer located in the counseling office. All of us need recommendations, transcripts, and to know about our graduation requirements, but the counselors make it so difficult for us. They try to have senior talks with each individual academy group of seniors. But they have not been successful. Why can't they just have a large senior talk after school? Seniors who actually care about graduating would stay after school to get information. Some of us go to Maxwell or Grayson-Tech, and usually the academy senior talks are during lunch. Thus, some seniors are unaware of information that is necessary for graduation. I honestly feel that the counselors are helping the students who aren't on the track to graduate more than the students who actually are going to graduate. Why am I penalized because other seniors don't and didn't care about passing their classes? Our motto was "college not if, but where," but now it seems more like "just trying to get you out of here."

This is a response to the parent post from earlier today....my family was in a similar situation with one son entering South Gwinnett and the other a rising freshman. We moved to a different school district midway through the school year last year. It was the best decision we could have made. My children (both of whom are AP Honors students) are finally being challenged in a school with other similar students. The extra attention the teachers are able to provide allows for the kids to really learn. Both of my sons are thriving once we removed them from the Snellville school systems.
