We've had a very positive experience at FBHS. My daughter has adjusted very well being a new student coming from a different state. The teachers have been great and the students have been very nice. I don't have anything negative to say.

FBHS isn't as impressive as its faculty and students like to think it is. There are a TON of AP students, but almost none of them take the classes or their teachers seriously. And nearly every teacher just lets it slide or even plays along. The school idolizes its athletes (primarily the football team) at everyone else's expense. The predominantly white student body is full of racists, homophobes, etc. (when I was there, a group of students regularly marked restroom walls with swastikas, "white pride," "KKK," and slurs --- something I'd never seen at any of my previous schools even in Georgia) and most teachers lack the professionalism to at least conceal their own prejudices in dealing with students. A proposal to start a Gay-Straight Alliance was shot down by the administration as "grossly inappropriate." And, much like the town of Flowery Branch as a whole, the people there are almost invariably upper-middle class and they're very vocal about not associating with those of less fortunate circumstances.

The leadership in this school is awful. The AP's stick their head in the sand if there is a fight. Suspend the aggressor for 3-5 days and everything is swept under the rug. If you are black or an athletic student, you get away with anything and everything. Don't ever trust that they have your child's best interests at heart.

For some people a school in a small town setting may be rewarding, not for me. I transferred to Flowery Branch from a high school that was much more diverse with a larger student body, and I found the small town atmosphere killed my confidence and motivation for academic success. Little to no faculty support. Interest is primarily in the athletes, (sports highlights for 20 min of morning biology) college drop out rates among FB grads are pretty high. I graduated summa cum laude at Georgia State University, and I have been offered a full-ride academic scholarship for my masters degree at the University of Georgia... This is important because it highlights the lack of support I received at FB, when I somehow found support at a much more populated university that motivated me to work my butt off to become something larger than what a small town expected of a "yankee". I rode a B avg. at my time at FB, but I had to play catch up when I attended my first college classes. While I approached my transfer with an optimistic mind, it was not a good fit for me. FB may not be a good fit for some future students who come from diverse backgrounds....

My son graduated from FB. He loved the school, the atmosphere, the principal and his teachers. His fiance who attended a Gwinnett school was amazed that everyone knew who he was, she attended some classes where she didn't know anyone in the class. Great place!
