Academe of the Oaks Ratings & Reviews

I have two kids at Academe and find it a community of caring kids and adults who not only value learning, but one's place in the world. There's a strong emphasis on community service and outreach, even on a global level. The school has an incredible exchange program bringing students to our campus from other countries and sending our kids abroad for enriching experiences with different cultures. I keep hearing that kids who go to Academe are prepared for college studies and I do believe it. They will learn to work for their education, but they will have support from highly qualified teachers and the school's founder who cares deeply for each and every student. All the teachers and members of administration know each child, their parents and every student's individual learning situations, styles, and needs. It's a small school with a huge heart. Highly recommend it!

We had a horrible experience at Academe of the Oaks. Our son finished middle school at the Friends School, which was wonderful. Friends doesn't have a high school, so we thought Academe would be a natural progression. First, class sizes are very high. There were over 20 kids in all his classes (our daughter's private school has a 15:1 maximum ratio). The teachers were terrible. The teachers have cliques and their "favorites" and if your child is not one of them, they don't give your child any attention. My son and his best friend were miserable. There were no adults my son connected with to help us out. We withdrew him mid-way through 10th grade and put him in public school where he's much happier. The problem now, is that my son may not graduate on time. The system they use for credits at Academe is so wacky that if you try to move your child to another school, a lot of credits won't transfer. My husband contacted Academe repeatedly to work out this credit debacle to no avail. Unless your child does Waldorf straight through, I do NOT recommend this school. The facilities are terrible, the resources are scant, the class size is high, the teachers are just "meh," and there are cliques of popular kids who get all the attention. What a horrible experience. For the same money you get so much more from other area private schools.

Waldorf education focuses on human development. Students are taught in the present and are permitted to be young. When our four year old was in public school they had to walk in a straight line so they would be ready for first grade. The middle schoolers had to follow complicated outlines for reports so theyΓÇÖd be ready for high school. The high school kids had masses of homework and tests so theyΓÇÖd be ready for college. When our child transferred to Waldorf the relief from this stress was palpable. Our whole family was happier.

We love this school! Academics focuses on building students' abilities to observe, analyze, and draw conclusions. Our student has become fearless about tackling any number of difficult subjects. Curiosity and creativity are encouraged, and this spills over into the way the students approach each other. They honor what is unique in their classmates and look for similarities while making friends among their global exchange classmates. Green designation is an extra bonus--if you visit, be sure to check out the garden.

Academe is one of the best kept secrets in the City of Decatur. Our son is a senior and has attended Academe since ninth grade. Academe prepares him for college and life beyond. The teachers are very approachable and gives every student their cell phone numbers and email addresses, in case they have questions after class. My son is part of the Global Nomads Group, which videoconference with other students in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Academe also offers an exchange program. Some of our students have lived in France, Spain, Peru, and many other countries. There are so many wonderful things that I can say about Academe of the Oaks, but there is not enough space. Choosing Academe was one of the best decisions I could have made for my son. You won't be disappointed.
