My son attended two other schools before our seat opened up at TMS. I can honestly say we really did hit the jackpot. We are going on our 2nd year, and my son is doing amazing things. my son struggles with reading, and I'm very pleased to report he's getting the extra with his SST. I have yet to experience anything negative at TMS. my child loves his school, he loves the fact they get two recesses every. single. day! he gets to wiggle and move during class brain breaks via "Go Noodle" several times a day. Our family is very happy at TMS.

We were really looking forward to our child going to this school, seeing how highly it was ranked. Our child is advanced for her age in reading, writing and communicated this to the school. With their reply of acknowledgement and assurance that our child would be challenged, we gave our trust. Unfortunately, this did not happen. In fact, as we began to notice, the class our child was given seemed to be the 'low performers', with an unqualified substitute teacher for the first semester. We noticed digressions in her writing (for example, backwards letters or numbers were not corrected so became habit) and the reading material our child was given was for pre-K and K level, not 1st and 2nd grade level tested in. We suspected the school deliberately placed her in this low performing class to raise the class average to keep overall ranking up. Either that or our request was simply disregarded entirely. Either way, the administration was irresponsible, and if it was any indication of their motus operendi, this may not be the only incident of such practice. In addition to the academic shortcomings, we witnessed many time the substitute teacher having very little capacity to handle the 20 kids in the class, sometimes without an assistant. Again, completely irresponsible on the part of the administration. This person has no business leading a class room. Angry outbursts directed at particular kids, disrespect, irrational 'punishments', and keeping the entire class from going to recess are just some of the things we were aware of. All of this flies in the face of the picture they present. We struggled whether to keep our child there till the end of the semester, but felt it better to finish it out, then promptly withdrew her. She is back were she was for pre-K, and the teachers (two teachers for 12 kids here) love her and she is thriving, on track again with her academics and joyful outside of school. I truly hope other parents don't have the same experience we had, and to please pay attention to what their kids have to say about the school. Most importantly whether they are happy and feel like they are actually learning. And thanks for reading all this :)

It was difficult to give a star rating. It's between 2 & 3 stars ... yes, compared to the other options in the area it's more like 3 stars and maybe even 4. It comes down to what you value in your child's education & educational experience. I have to agree with one parent that said, when you walk down the halls of TMS you see a lot of unhappy/serious faces both on children and teachers. School should be a joyous experience, and again, I agree with the other parent that you can walk into other schools and hear children laughing and enjoying their learning experience. TMS is super focused on their "numbers" (their ranking) and losing sight of the joy children should feel when they go to school. It feels almost militant, and teachers and students look stressed. My child adapts very easily and has been in high-stress environments before and manages it beautifully, however, at TMS it was intense trying to keep up with so much process that's unnecessary. Just simplify things! The school is trying to squeeze in too much. It's like they are testing ideas out on the children, and it's overwhelming for the them. They love all their 'data driven' assessments etc, but you can't quantify a human being. It remains to be seen if the Museum Model is more beneficial. The exhibit nights are so overly packed with people that it is hard to get much from them. It's a cool idea, but I don't think the students are getting as much out of it as toted by the school's administrated. Basically, this school has 'packaged' itself beautifully, and they look good on paper ... but I think extremely overrated.

My son's been there 5 years. He truly cares about learning. Such a fantastic school -- caring, creative, resourceful. The community offers lots of chances to get connected. Great leadership.

Go visit Mt. Bethel Elementary in Cobb. You'll notice kids smiling, skipping down the hallway and hear laughter. Now visit The Museum School. You'll see serious faces on teachers, and lots of unsmiling, but very quiet kids. That's because kids get in trouble or have recess taken away if they talk in the hallways. If they talk loud in the cafeteria, some rude assistant teacher, who certainly doesn't demonstrate their core value of "respect", but instead acts like a prison guard, will put them have silent lunch. On any given day, at least three or four tables will be having silent lunch. Still the kids are learning a lot, going on field trips, getting rewards for good behavior and for DeKalb County, it's the only game in town. However, once the kids reach middle school, the majority are very unhappy. The administration knows nothing about running a middle school and it shows. They don't have enough staff, don't offer a variety of levels (just slow or advanced in each class), and many parents pull their kids out.
