Springmont School in Atlanta Ratings & Reviews

My children have been "Montessori children" since they were toddlers. Although they stared somewhere else, it was not until we moved to Springmont that they truly blossomed. Our family was attracted to the school because the approach to learning responds to my child's development from a young age all the way through middle school. What we didn't expect was how important the arts program would be in shaping our children's outlook on their life. Each of our children have found a passion that feeds their self esteem and confidence through the music, art or drama program. Two of our children have graduated the middle school program to go on to their first choice private high school. I cannot help but credit the teachers who saw my children's potential and encouraged them to find their path. They had a vision of what could be and the faith and knowledge to help them find success academically and personally.

Each day my children are eager to go to school and they are always reporting about the interesting things they are learning in their classrooms and around the beautiful Springmont campus. My children have been given opportunities to care for the school animals, investigate roots outside in the garden while learning about botany, attend open music studio to seek more assistance on their musical instrument, make a clay model for a history project during open art studio, bake with a friend and share it for snack time, participate in school plays, go to the 86-acre Land School, play on the school's large fields and attend homework hour after school if extra help is needed. My children's love of learning, confidence in themselves and strong sense of responsibility make it evident to me that my children are thriving at Springmont!

We have 2 children at Springmont, one in Primary and the other in Toddler. Our children love it, and we love it. All teachers are specialists and the ratio of teachers to students is well above average. Staff and administration couldn't be more helpful and attentive, and the parent community is very active. Classrooms are diverse and foreign language is taught from day one. Students learn life-skills from the very beginning, something that is missed in traditional classrooms. The toddler classes are not daycare; the little ones are learning key developmental skills, as well as cleaning, folding, sweeping, and even cooking. In primary, it is not unusual to see 4 and 5 year-olds working on math problems and cursive writing, a lost art. Academics are stressed, but are self-paced and made to be fun. The campus is unique compared to other schools we visited, including solar power and geothermal water heating, nature trail, outdoor reading areas and hammocks, farm animals, plus all the regular features such as basketball/activity court, soft turf soccer/activity field, and large playground space for all ages (which I hear is getting a nice upgrade!). The offsite Land School is also a major plus. Overall, we are thrilled to be at Springmont!

Was very interested in my child attending this school. Received very poor communication and customer service from the staff. They had my family come from out of state, and then didn't want to give us a tour. We ended up touring ourselves and going to the admin office for a brochure. The staff was very rude and could care less that a new student was interested in their school. Stunning campus, but the staff is horrible. If this is how you act with new students, I'm afraid to see how you handle other issues.

Springmont has been exceptional for our now 5.5 year old son. I grew up attending a prestigious private school and graduating from an Ivy League university. So I was surprised when our 3 year old was unhappy at his church preschool. We didn't have grand aspirations for preschool -- just that our son would make friends and have fun. We figured academia could come later. We were so confused when he became quieter, more withdrawn and unhappy. We had seen that this environment was traditional and very rigid. Everyone cut out the same heart during art, studied the same letter of the alphabet each week, etc. Seemed fine to me! But our child's response indicated otherwise. So we sought out other options. I was hesitant about Montessori -- that it was too "different" or sheltering. But my husband really wanted to try it. So we moved forward. Most importantly, within weeks, our son's "light" came back. He was excited to talk about school. I was just glad to have my happy boy back. What happened over the next 12-15 months really surprised me. Not only did our son's joy and love for learning grow, he also became more articulate and thoughtful of others. By the end of his first year, he was thrilled to have discovered addition and subtraction. He constantly practiced his math over the summer and learned to play Monopoly -- counting money and collecting rent. At the start of this year, he discovered multiplication and has been writing out multiplication tables ever since. He is reading words, sounding out words, and asked to learn the game of chess, which he is amazingly good at. Is my child a genius? No, I don't think so. He is a bright, inquisitive boy who was in a stifling environment. When I first visited Montessori, I didn't understand what appeared to be children wandering around a classroom. I now see what education and discovery are all about. It is thrilling to see our son thrive and we are beyond thankful for Springmont. I had concerns about whether he would learn time management skills but that is taught in lower elementary. It's a brilliant philosophy -- draw out and recognize what is special in each child instead of forcing convention on everyone. Be patient with each child's development. Now that I have seen our son's growth, I am able to be patient as other skills develop. I wish all parents the best in making these challenging educational decisions!
