Midtown International School, Inc. Ratings & Reviews

I have 2 children at MIS in elementary. MIS has creative and dedicated teachers, an innovative & challenging curriculum, and no more than 12 kids per class! There is very minimal homework, and when it is assigned, it's not just busy work. Things I don't love: too many windows (distraction for the kids), PTO is weak, and there is no testing at all (I'm old school, and believe that some testing is a good thing). They place a great deal of emphasis on collaboration and group work. So if your child does not do well with working in a group, you may want to reconsider. One reviewer commented on the fact that it's not a "top tier" private school. If your priority is a top tier private school, MIS will probably not work out. If your priority is finding a GOOD FIT for your child, look into MIS.

There are many 5 star reviews of MIS so I felt obligated to give my review so there is at least more balance here. My child went here the first year the school opened when it was still in the old midtown location so I can't speak about the new facility but I found the old one very lacking (pathetic outside play area, low ceilings and tiny classrooms, gym and library). Hopefully the new one is better. Other policies may have changed also since we attended.I really liked Ande, the director, and was very impressed with the curriculum and most of the concepts she used in her education philosophy. I think it is a little unique in the private school and I loved the global teaching style. That's where the good ends. The school touts itself as for "gifted" students only which was ridiculous. The kids are average, including my own kid. There are also MANY kids with developmental delays/disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, language disorders and autism. I think these kids are more than capable of performing academically but there were many behavioral issues and MIS was completely clueless as to how to deal with them. There was an autistic boy in my son's class that was constantly disruptive and the school refused to take any steps to handle the situation. I think they really didn't know what to do since they had none of the tools that public schools have for this. As another reviewer stated, I agree the school is VERY cliquish. Many of the kids feed in from Ande's 2 preschools and already know her and are friends with her. These parents and kids are clearly given preferred treatment. We left after one school year but there were 2 kids (in a class of 12) that left at winter break and I know of at least two others that left when we left. But they seemed to have absolutely no problem filling those spots extremely quickly with new students so I think this is a school that is a great fit for a lot of kids (especially kids with developmental issues that can't get into other top tier private schools like Paideia or Woodward) and their parents know they would be miserable in a large public school. Personally I do not think any of these second tier private schools are worth the money. You pay almost as much as a top tier school with much less to show for it. I'd advise visiting the school and sitting in a class before making a decision.

What a great school for gifted learners! Every day I think, "This is a school that I wish I could go to!" The teachers are enthusiastic about teaching, the students are enthusiastic about learning, and the parents are engaged, involved, and amazingly supportive - including ~90%+ annual fund participation. MIS is quickly becoming recognized in the community as a leader in gifted education. To be sure, MIS is not for every gifted student. Students must be self-motivated, willing to be stretched and challenged, and able to work with other students in a respectful way.

The best decision we ever made was putting our children int this school. I knew it when I heard Ande, the head of school, tell parents "no child waits to learn" at MIS. Unfortunately, my kids had been doing a lot of waiting at their public school and were bored. The classes are small (12 max), the teachers are all caring and supportive and the kids are encouraged to exercise the creativity and independence (like forming student led clubs). The foreign travel adds a whole new dimension to instruction. I especially love how the curriculum is thematically connected (last year was human rights) and kids aren't learning various subjects in a vacuum and expected to make connections on their own.

My daughter just finished her second year at MIS, she started in K and just finished 1st grade. Last year was good, but this year was incredible. Ms. Snyder the first grade teacher is amazing, I could not have dreamt of a better teacher. She taught in the most creative and interesting ways. They learned addition, subtraction, geometry ( not just shapes but angle vertices), word problems, and started multiplication while playing games or taking imaginary journeys in math. My daughter was writing critical essays and Haiku poems. She studied poems by Carl Sandburg and other poets. She now knows what a metaphor and an idiom are and puts "juicy" details in her creative writing. She studied the format of writing essays as an imaginary hamburger and can write essays in the first grade. Every week in social studies a student would pick a different country to study, they got pretty far off the beaten path and studied countries like Mali and Cambodia. In science they did experiments of all kinds and studied everything from Animals, to plants, to the environment( recycling and worm composting). My daughter now looks in the sky and tells me the cloud is a cirrus or stratus cloud and makes weather forecasts. The amazing thing about this year is that my daughter was having fun everyday and learning without realizing it. She also studied French, Spanish, and Mandarin. Mandarin is her favorite, who would have guessed. This past year was so wonderful, that I was sad to see the school year end. I saw the previous review and don't understand it. I have only met nice parents, who care deeply about their children. My daughter is very happy and I look forward to a great year in second grade. If you want your child to have a more personalized learning experience in an enviornment that is happy and exciting MIS is for you.
