My son who is dyslexic attending this school for 3 years. He learned a love of music in the band - it was an incredible program. He also has become an amazing writer which blows me away as he struggled tremendously with writing any type of paper when he started the school. Also the mastery program at Ben Franklin is exceptional! It teaches the students to become more independent learners.

When we learned we were moving back to Atlanta from DC, my son was in eighth grade, an excellent student at an excellent private school. Yet one thing was missing: his joy in learning, which had dripped away in the competitive, almost rigid atmosphere of school and city. While someone already had told us about BFA, we also toured the more well-regarded Atlanta schools as my son’s math teacher counseled us to.Then upon visiting BFA, my son took to it, especially the moment we met Dr. Burdette, the Head of School. So starting in ninth grade, his education was transformed, though it took a few months to discover what that would mean. Because he could go at whatever pace he liked, for example, it was up to him to maintain his intensity; and gradually, as he learned the school’s rhythms, he got more out of it than we'd ever expected. Gone was his excitement about leaving school at the end of the day. Plus, his joy was back. Thanks to the amazing faculty and staff, he engaged with his classes, everything from French to Geometry, and just kept going, smoothly, happily, and very, very substantively. And while I emphasize and credit the caring faculty and staff, I don’t mean to lump them together. Au contraire: everyone has a unique personality, background, as do the students, and my son has delighted in many of them, while also receiving, and participating in, a rigorous education.Granted, some might be worried about his or her teen attending a less well-known school; but be assured that he or she can always find external validation and the school will help. My son was nominated for the Governor’s Honors Program, and attended; he made high scores on a national French exam and his APs; also made over 1500 on his SAT last spring, his junior year. Most of all, he’s happy; he’s not being taught that he's some trained poodle in a rigid system. He takes responsibility for his education and loves his school community, which incidentally includes helping to clean the kitchen, alongside the magnificent Ms. Bailey. Though I don't know yet where he’ll go to college, I feel great about our decision, because he’s pursued his own interests, not a script with a predetermined outcome. Thank you, BFA!

We love Ben Franklin. Our daughter was very bored in the traditional school she attended previously. She was getting excellent grades and behaved well, so her teachers logically enough did not give her much attention, certainly were not interested in her questions which covered material far in excess of grade level. At Ben Franklin, she can go at her own pace and so cover the normal material much faster then a traditional classroom, but more then that, her teachers will take the time, and are knowledgeable enough, to answer her questions fully.

My son is a recent Emory University graduate thanks to Ben Franklin Academy. He credits his success to his positive experiences at this private high school located just steps away from the Emory campus. This place is many things to many people. In my opinion, it’s for anyone seeking individualized, mastery learning, the flexibility to pursue their passions (through the work/study program) and a supportive, knowledgeable team focused on student success. I am astounded by the list of honors and AP classes offered as well as the caliber of the faculty. This proud mom thinks BFA should be your first choice for a first-class, college-prep high school education.
