Lincoln Elementary Magnet School Ratings & Reviews

I have a daughter who attended her 4th and 5th grade years and a stepdaughter who is an upcoming senior at this school. I love this school! The school is very structured and he children are well-behaved. I will not lie to you--the kids have a lot of homework and projects throughout the year, but it makes the kids more self-disciplined, responsible, and active in their learning. Both of my girls came from a regular public school and did not have a clue on how to write in cursive. Within a month, both of them were writing in cursive smoothly! The only concern I have is the bullying among students on a couple of occasions. I do believe this problem needs to be addressed with parents, students, and teachers. The teachers are well-qualified and patient with their students. I love the principal and his administration staff! If you are ready to be involved in your patient's learning, then this is the school for you! If you want a more structured and responsible child, then this is the school for you! I would highly recommend this school to anyone! GO LEMS LIONS!!!

When we relocated to Albany from Pittsburgh, real estate agents & recruiters directed us to the two well known private schools in the area and never mentioned Lincoln. I found Lincoln through GreatSchools.org. After one visit my husband and I were blown away with the high standards/expectations for students, caring teachers, requirement of parent involvement, student use of technology, and well mannered students. Although the school is "in the hood" I feel my child is very safe there. My child is in the 2nd grade and has adjusted very well. His first day of school was met with some issues of exclusion because he was new. Lincoln teachers/administration cleared that up the very next day and we have had no other issues. In addition, within 2 weeks of starting school, he went from reading "like a robot" to reading very smoothly and fluently. It was amazing! I have all good things to say. I did, however, have to come to terms with the amount of homework given. But I see the benefits. These students are taught strategies to succeed in their courses. I've read some of the previous negative reviews, but keep in mind the age of the reviews. Administration has changed. My whole family loves Lincoln. We find great value in this school and we made the right decision.

If academic scores is your only reason for choosing a school, this is the best school in Albany. However, if you ever have a problem or disagree with administration over any concern you may have that will affect your child's learning environment, don't expect to gain much support. You will be reminded that Lincoln is a school of choice, and you can take your child to another school if you don't agree with their decision, even if you are right to be concerned. Beware! The same rules do not apply to everyone! Over the past ten years that I have had children in this school, I know many, many parents who have removed their children for this reason and others. All the information you need to see the REAL issues with the school system as a whole is to read the local newspaper over the past couple of years.

If I could put a negative rating, I would. While the school's academics are outstanding, their concern for the children is lacking. There is nothing wrong with playing popular music at school events but when that music has content that is so repulsive that I cannot repeat it on this review there should be a big concern. I was assured that the Principal reviews all the music. This concerns me since what I heard playing at a school event for first graders were the so-called clean versions of the songs. This was not an isolated incident. There were at least three songs with repulsive lyrics being played to 6 year olds. The school said that they would have to have a DJ clean up the "clean" versions. WHY ARE YOU LETTING 6 YEAR OLDS LISTEN TO MUSIC THAT THE "CLEAN" VERSIONS ARE STILL INAPPROPRIATE? Maybe they should be listening the music that the only version is CLEAN.
