Union Park Middle School Ratings & Reviews

My daughter has been enrolled at Union Park Middle school for alost 2 years. Some of her teachers tried to teach by insulting their students when they couldnt control their students. She is a fairly quiet student who doesn't say much to anyone, however, she's already been assaulted twice in one year. The school likes to turn a blind eye to problematic children. This has not been a good experience.

I enjoyed my time there but there can and should be a lot of improvements.

The school has dedicated and caring instructional and non-instructional staff. Unfortunately administration has driven over 40 teachers away including the Administrative Dean, the School Secretary, the Curriculum Specialist, the Math Coach, the Reading Coach, the Athletic Director, Math Department Head, Social Studies Department Head, 4 art teachers, the ESE Coordinator, the ISS Teacher, and the President of the PTSA. The new principal did not understand the needs of the school and relied upon input from an assistant principal, the same one that drove almost half the staff to leave. She should look at the works of Ruby Payne and other academic products relating to Low Income Environments to better understand the needs of her school. The lack of support from administration undermined the work done by teachers. It is difficult to garner respect from students when administration does not support it's teaches. Lots of want-to-be gang members who laugh at the "i'll give you another chance, just don't do that again" methods of discipline. Teachers administer lunch detentions or hand in referrals, but administration does not deem it necessary for the student to comply.

January 23, 2013 Submitted by a parent
My daughter is in the 7th grade and has been here since the 6th. This is the worst school. The teachers mean well, however they have their work cut out for them. If parents do not involve themselves more or if the school and/or the principle does not involve herself more in what's going on in the school it will continue to go downhill. I have never met the principle and I have had several meetings here. I am taking my daughter out. This school does very little in the interest of bettering the school. I am a very disappointed parent.
