As a former student at One School of the Arts, my days had their ups and downs. The kids in my class were not always kind to me, and I find that my new private school is a much more accepting environment. One School promotes whole-brain teaching, which consists of hand motions, response, and other engaging or clever tactics. Though I like One School's motives, I think that once kids get into the upper grades, this can become patronizing. Whole-brain teaching became annoying to me, and I ended up being in a bad mood often, not made any better with "class, class, yes, yes (one of their teaching strategies)". I think that One School's kindergarten and eighth grade graduations are overrated, considering that my eighth grade graduation lasted three hours because of all the photo slideshows and recorded speeches of each student, that we had to sit through. Yet, One School maintains an environment where one can feel more free to express their artistic skills and opinions. They even have a program to join where students can give opinions about matters of the school. Their administration is very open to new ideas and suggestions, and I felt welcomed whenever I had an administrative member I wanted to speak with concerning the school. Overall, One School of the Arts is a school with a good Christian mindset, and their morals and ideas are unique and out-of-the-box. One School is not your typical private school, which is an admirable quality. Yet, One School has ways to grow in their efficiency and the way they manage the class. Students here are not the most accepting, and I managed to get roped into some major drama my freshman year. I'm not sure if I recommend One School...it just depends on what class your child is going into.

My son just graduated from this school where he has been attending since the 6th grade. The graduation showcased each of the scholars in individual and group videos that were awe inspiring. I kept thinking to myself throughout the commencement, wow I am so thankful to the Lord for bringing my son to this wonderful school. I have worked in a public high school for over twenty years now, and was going to put my son at my school, but as the Lord would have it, One School of the Arts received accreditation that summer, and he wanted to stay and practically everyone of his classmates remained as well. I know many of his classmates from gatherings we had at our house, and through the many school related activities. I have never seen such a tight knit, encouraging, loving, supportive group of friends anywhere. It is a place where each child is challenged academically, and is nurtured and encouraged to bring out their God given talents, abilities, and gifts. This is the purpose of this school, it is their mission statement, this is what the faculty and staff all work together to achieve in their scholars. My son developed his love for music and the courage to perform it through their celebrated music teacher, Angelo Ballestero, look him up! He along with his other teachers, counselors, admin staff poured their hearts in my son and his friends. My son went on a mission trip with Tim and Karla Waisanen, and a few character workshops with them as well...they were life changing. The principal of the school Kristen Campbell, who with her husband, run the charity, Feed the Children Everywhere is a true visionary and the architect of this inspired concept of a school. She was a great teacher and mentor before she took on the principalship of the school. She knows how to hire great teachers and retain them as well. The students love this school, and they are not beat down by the relentless barrage of standardize tests that they have at public schools. They are not trained to take the ACT and SAT like they are in public schools, so I may recommend sending your child to a tutor if they need to raise their score. There are easy tips and tricks to taking those tests, and knowing them will make a significant difference in the outcome. Lastly, at graduation, after hearing the stories of the other graduates, I realized that this school has many miracle workers!

We have had only positive experiences. I don't agree with all the choices made by school leadership, but we respect the choices. I also know that perfection is impossible. We have personally seen a marked change in happiness in our scholar this year. In addition, I like the traditional curriculum. We have been impressed.

Do not fall for the hype of this school. While they have beautiful ads/graphics and talk a big game about arts and character, I found it simply a mask for a mediocre, parochial School. My child did dance last year and there was so much turn around with the dance instructors and then the same with the art teacher. If there was no teacher, the sub had them play hangman Jesus (I kid you not). My kids came home with very little art and what little art they did come home with was something they did in preschool. School of Arts - nope it is not. The big character push at this school is a thinly veiled mask as well. My children went to a very good public school before and are back in a public school now and the kids are much kinder in those schools than One School. I observed students speaking rudely to one another and teachers doing nothing about it. Most teachers do not have their classes under control and was shocked at how students acted and spoke to one another. There is nothing welcoming about this school. It is not worth the cost, especially if you are in a decent school zone. Another basic professionalism indicator is that when the students enter into different mathgroup levels they call them high, medium, low groups. When my kid was put into respective group I asked the teacher if the students knew which level they were and they told me no. With math groups called high, medium, low, how can they tell me the students don’t know what group they’re in? Just Basic basic level teaching faux pas and unprofessionalism. These kinds of examples abound at this mess of a school. The amount of religion taught at this school far surpasses a “nondenominational approach” as was told to our family during tours and interviews. I’m deeply upset with our experience at this school. My children were both behind going back to public school and much more welcomed when they arrived at the new school. I am so thankful that I do not have to take my kids there every day anymore. Please reconsider this school as an option for your family.
