Healthy Learning Academy Charter School Ratings & Reviews

I have worked at HLA for 5 years and it is an amazing place to come to every morning. The small population means I can know every student by name and interacte with all the classes. The goal of all the teachers and staff is to make every child feel safe and loved everyday. We encourage and teach the students how to live healthy lifestyles, good citizenship and how to care for the planet is everything they do.

I believed in the school wholeheartedly and never imagined it would take such a turn. The mass exodus of students throughout the school (8 from one grade this past year) the last two years demonstrates there is an issue that is not being addressed. Parents attempted to involve the Board to achieve a resolution at the end of the 2015-2016 school year and while they acknowledged and even addressed the isues, they were unwilling to make any real and lasting changes. The principal has total autonomy without credentials to back it up. No Masters, no principal certification. Be careful if you are deciding to attend this school and be sure to check in with your child regularly. It is amazing what they see and hear that is concerning. Some say it's better than public school, however, at least in public school, when someone is incompetent, you have somewhere to go with it and get results when there is such overwhelming evidence.

The principal at this school rules it with an iron fist, but has no knowledge of what is best for students. She regularly pits staff against parents and against one another. There is a visible schism in staff -- those who kiss up to the principal and those who refuse to. Three staff members who dared not side with her were recently let go, to the dismay of many students and parents. There has been a recent mass exodus of students from HLA. The vast majority of students who would be entering third grade this year at HLA have gone elsewhere because of the incompetence of leadership. They force children to use phonics techniques that have been proven not to work, and even mark off perfectly correct answers if the techniques aren't followed. Discipline is wildly inconsistent, often punishing the entire school for a few children's "wrongdoings." Children are chastised about lunch choices, even if such choices are healthy (i.e., "yogurt has sugar, it's bad for you.") Physical education is hamstrung, as the principal is too scared of a lawsuit to let the children have actual equipment or fun. They are not allowed to play basketball for fear they might accidentally touch one another, and tag is verboten. She is a technophobe who wags her finger at those who dare let their children learn anything using a computer or television, who watch PG movies, or who let their kids play video games. If you want your child to experience despotic dictatorship, this is the school for you.

My family and I moved to Florida from Iowa mid school year 2013 I enrolled my daughter at HLA and have nothing but praise for the teachers, principal and parents of HLA. The teachers have gone above and beyond to help my daughter and the strides she has made in the last year and a half have been just amazing! I am certain that my daughter would not be as far along in her education if I would have enrolled her elsewhere. We have had many struggles and this school has been so supportive.

I have been driving my two daughters an hr and a half each way to attend this great school for 4 years. The teachers are excellent and the principle is extremely helpful and involved. If you want the best education and you do not mind participating a little bit, there is no question that Healthy Learning Academy is the best opportunity for your children to become healthier, smarter and positive. After two years attending a well-rated public school, the difference in their education and development has been polarizing with Healthy Learning Academy.
