Coral Gables Preparatory Academy Ratings & Reviews

My son transferred from another K-8 combined magnet school and was able to get him into their upper academy (the middle school section). He was experiencing bullying which was causing him social anxiety and effecting his academics. I am so thankful that I got him into this school. In less than a school year, he made a huge turn around. I was so worried about the academic ratings, but the inclusiveness of the school, the bullying, and the overall atmosphere play a huge role in a child's progress. My son was not doing well and I was really worried. This school is a million times better, they have good ratings in academics, but they also have separated the younger and older students into the lower academy and upper academy which prevents a lot of issues - and they don't have the bullying issues, drug issues, or issues of "well-off" students harassing and humiliating other students. They also offer several programs and activities which promote position relationships and friendships between students instead of just academic competitiveness. I want my son to do well, but I also want him to enjoy his childhood, to feel wanted and welcome, to make friends. This school is the first school that has been able to offer ALL of that.

We moved to Coral Gables and live at 1 block from the school but they said they don't accept new students except students that previously attended the school. The most unfriendly reception ever in the US. I'm so glad they are full.

The teachers are trying but the schools rules don't let them do much. They can't send home the tests and there's no feedback about the difficulties the kid is having unless the parent asks for a conference. My son was placed on a 504 plan and after the accommodations his grades were worse.. Again, no feedback from the school. The staff at the middle school campus is Greta, they are always looking for ways to assist. However, the staff at the elementary campus is rude and unpleasant.

What makes a great school? Strong leadership is a key factor, and unfortunately for those kids attending Coral Gables Prep. Academy, Graciela Cerra is the most incompetent principal ever. Rude, arrogant with a poor overall vision for the school. Cerra tells everyone what he/she wants to hear. She says “yes” to everyone but doesn’t take action. Thanks to people like Graciela Cerra this beautiful traditional school is going down the drain. Love your children, do not send them to CGPA.

Horrible!! Staff is rude, they don't even make an effort to treat people well (I'm just talking about saying "good morning" or "excuse me"-they don't know this words and its meaning). Principal is always stressed out and rushing things, even rush people out of the office instead of trying to help. How can a school full of people lacking those basic skills teach kids? Teachers screaming in the classrooms without patience and so much more…Not to mention how dirty the school is… bathrooms are the worse, auditorium was built in 1923 and it seems that it haven't been cleaned since then. We came from a different state and a public school with high standards… its been very difficult to adapt to this new school. I just don't want my kids to learn that being rude is normal, because it is not and if you treat kids this way, this will be what they will learn. Sad! I can see the unsatisfaction in the eyes of almost every single person in that school.
